hello everyone,I just want to give some tips for all the mapmakers out there. When I look at the maps that are posted on www.generalsfiles.com I must say it dissapoints me. Some maps are whole flat with some gigantic steep mountains in it, a load of oil derricks surrounded buy a ton of bunkers, and all that with as little detail as possible. I don't understand even some of those maps got a score of 8/10, I just don't understand that... A map is supposed to be nice looking at and playable ! Most people seem to forget that last one. When playing a map with 5 oil derricks in a valley surrounded by 5 to 10 bunkers you'll either be playing for a very long time because you just can't get through all those bunkers. Or your game will be finished soon because someone has all those derricks just because he was 30 seconds earlier at them. That's just not fair dudes! A map should be playable, which means no loads of bunkers and artillery. If a guy wants to defend his oil derricks he will build defence. Also, try to put your oil derricks and other Tech buildings on tactical places, keypoints you may say. Try to be originel with your map, not a square map for 4 players with a mountain in the middle with a bunch of oil derricks. Try to build a map which won't give people the idea that they already played it once. I many maps I see mountains that are just one huge square block, that's not nice dudes, try to build your mountain peace by peace, very calm and gently, a good mountain isn't build in 5 seconds! If you decide to seperate camps by a river, build more then enough bridges! One or two bridges won't do the trick, that only gives one h*ll of advantage to the air force generals out there. When there are only 2 bridges both teams will bunker them so bad that you just can't get through. Yes you can destroy all of it with some artillery but smart players build a secondary defence to! Lots of bridges is the answer with enough width so trucks can cross it next to each other and not behind each other! Try to give your map a look of it's own, a personal touch visible through details. It's so much more fun when you play a detailed map, just fun to look at! I just can't stress it enough, build a pretty map! :naughty: As I said before, don't go crazy on the oil derricks and supply's, 2 supply's and 1 oil derrick in the base is more then enough. After that you can put some more derricks or other Tech stuff on tactical places, not a bunch of derricks in a valley as I said before. Build some small or large villages on the map, villages are keypoints and always fun to play with! Build a tactical map, some roads, some choke points, some villages, some keypoints, ... An empty map isn't fun at all. A tactical map with tactical keypoints and stuff are really cool to play with! To put it all in a row... - be original - build a map that is playable! - don't go crazy on the oil derricks and bunkers/towers/... - detail your map - be sure to have more then 1 entrance to a base - when camps get seperated thru a river, build lots of bridges - villages rule ;) - tactical, tactical, tactical! - ... Any remarks or questions at these tips are welcome. I hope I helped some of the starting map builders out there :) keep on building!!! :bows:

Thx, we'll my last map is visible at http://www.generalsfiles.com/file.info?ID=21957 my first map isn't playable enough but it makes a pretty nice map as well (http://www.generalsfiles.com/file.info?ID=21891) --> when I created this one I hadn't so much experience so there's only 1 passage which isn't good :).

Those 2 maps look ugly. I am working on a map and here is a few screenshots of it. It's my very first one by the way.

Howdy, you want origionality? Look up my map "End of the World v1.1" I strayed away from boring corner battles and bridges. Honestly my map still scares me, it's just too eerie to be driving over a dead city.

Well I don't know much about it having a village, it actually used to in the bottom right corner. As for resources, good luck, all players have to find them....haha

I still play End of the World v1.1 at lan parties, since no single person can take a side without being threatened by the enemy...

Look for one of my Newest maps to come called "Pathfinder", it is mars based and 8 player for Zero Hour. It's environment will make you :bows:

Good topic... Great Tips...

If you mean pathfinder.....well no. There was a name issue with it that might not pass. But I am re-sending it today. So look for it in a few days... :uhm:
