We all know what a 'canon' design is, at least, we should do - for those that don't, it is a design that has explicitly been seen in a Trek show or movie. I was wondering however, about such designs. There are a lot of kitbashed ships that have played a part too, and if one could rewrite what was shown, what would you choose to have? TOS - Personally, I'd try and stick with three - five designs. Namely the Daeladus, Constitution and a pre-TMP Miranda (to name three). The Constitution and Miranda would continue into TMP, along with the Oberth, Constellation and Excelsior. TLE would give us the Ambassador, and many of the TMP ships would still be in use. Then moving onto TNG, we'd have the Galaxy and Nebula, along with the Defiant, Intrepid, Sovereign. TNG I think, should be split into two. Early TNG, and Late TNG. Early should have the Ambassador, Galaxy, Nebula, Defiant and Intrepid. Late TNG should have the Akira, Sabre, Prometheus and Sovereign.. maybe the Steamrunner and Norway too. The Centaur could / should have been a Sabre or Miranda, and the Wold 359 kitbashes should have been something else too. Anyway, I've chosen to stick to canon designs for my listing, though please, if you'd care to have your say, non-canon designs are welcome (though a picture or two would be nice, so people know which ship you are on about).

That makes sense. If you figure a large fleet of ships, some are bound to be damaged and would be repaired at various facilities throughout their territory. They'd be repaired with whatever such facilities had on hand, I'm sure at some point they wouldn't downgrade an old TOS miranda with the round-connie style nacelles if they had the TMP style nacelles to replace them with. So that'd be a connie-style saucer miranda with TMP nacelles. Think about todays fleets, would they completely overhaul a destroyer or aircraft carrier if they wanted to upgrade it? No, they'd retro-fit the new tech onto the existing ships as-is, more or less.

The ones that look decent and fit with their specific timeline. A fine example would be the New Orleans Class. I hate, hate horrible kitbashes that take designs to the extreme by adding a ridiculous number of unecessary parts like having six nacelles, a shitload weapon pods and what not. That's just bogus and unimaginative. The future Enterprise refit from TNG: "All Good Things" was horrible.

Indeed, the New Orleans I'd allow, though I'd change her nacelles. She is smaller than the Gal/Neb, yet has the same style nacelles. I'd have them altered a bit. I completely agree. The Curry Class, The Niagara / Freedom Class, The Centaur Class... along with many more.

I like the Centaur class. It is a fairly modern looking Frigate/Scout that made use of Excelsior class parts instead of the older Constitution class parts like the Miranda.

I personally wasnt too fond of All Goof Things Enterprise upgrade because it seemed to violate the unspoken rule of warp engines must be in pairs for balanced warp fields.

I did not like the Constellation class either.

One ship I would like to see updated is the Klingon D-7 class.

That'd be interesting to see, got plans for one in ZH? :p

My point exactly, it also had that weird and pointless antenna at the bridge module and the massive phaser cannon below the saucer. Why spoil an elegant looking ship by adding all those fanboyish elements?

Technically, that'd be the K'Tinga ;)

I want a new impulse engine module on rear hull and different engines, and possibly a redesigned boom and command pod and bridge.

Or a all new design similar to how the Excelsior replaced the Constitution class.

I kind of liked the 'all good things' refit. IMO, the third nacelle should've been on the saucer section though, so that when the ship seperates the saucer section would still have warp drive. It would be like having a seperate saladin class vessel along for the ride. I was always under the impression that the third nacelle was more for overall extra power than extra warp capability per se. That would make for a formidable weapon, channeling the entire output of the third nacelle's matter/anti-matter generators through the phaser cannon and still having the other two nacelles for mobility.

IIRC there was one such refit similar to this released as an addon for ST Bridge Commander, kinda like a modernized TNG version of sorts.

In all honesty, the only canon design I'd see redone/revised would be the NX class of ST:Enterprise.

It looked like an upside down Akira class.
