Just thought id see what peoples comments are on the Conspiracy episode. I think it has to be one of the more mysterious episodes of Star Trek, espically at the end when the message was sent off into space. Where did they come from what was their ultimate goal. Ive herd and read about many theorys one being that it was an early attempt by a modified version of species 8472 to gain control of the Federation. Some have said it has to to with the founders? It was also the only episode that the BBC have never shown as they said it was too graphic and yes that means the scene where Remecks head explodes and that mother creature comes out of him. Check out the expression on Picards face when it does. "Doctor one does not beam down to Starfleet Command armed"

That episode was really a one time deal...Away to pump up mystery and suspense in the early show.

It came to not and won't be revisted.

If anything it may have been another probe by an invading force Like the Kelvans

I wouldn't pay too much attention to fan fiction ideas. It's unfortunate that these ideas can come out of anyone's arse and that they try to fit it into a workable storyline. In some ways, I think that these bug-like aliens are better left a mystery; it's mainly why this episode was so good. Any attempt to give these aliens a backstory would only tarnish the mystery. And yes, Remmick's head exploding is probably what this episode is most famous for. Afterall, it's unusually gruesome for Star Trek.

I liked it, one of the best epis...the mystery surrounding the coded message to Picard, that only Starship Captains have access to, and theres no record of...The meeting with the other starship capts...it was an awesome baseline, they should have revisited that storey in later seasons! (Maby base one of the Trek movies on, with the Founders behind it all...great concept!)

As far as non-canon info on them goes... in the DS9 Relaunch novels set after the end of the series those parasites come back and try to take over Bajor.

Spoiler: Show
They take over Shakaar, who gets shot by a Trill named Gard(sort've a 'cleaner' for the Symbiosis Comission, killed Joran Dax) as he's about to ratify Bajor's entrance into the Federation. Station gets put on lockdown, Gard gets captured by Lt Ro and a Jem'Hadar Odo sent to the Alpha Quadrant(Taran'atar.) It turns out they're genetically similar to Trill symbionts and were first encountered by a previous Dax host and Christopher Pike. Not too sure about their relationship to Trill(yet to read that book) but after Shakaar gets killed a ship is taken over by a parasite who sets it on course to Trill, and it's stated that in the episode 'Conspiracy' the Admirals under control were positioning ships close to Trill. Cardassians prove to be immune to them, as does Taran'atar(the Jem'Hadar chews it when it jumps in his mouth.) Turns out that a much larger version of the creature is hiding out in the same Barjoan monastery that houses the Orbs. Kira goes down to confront it, opens all the Orbs... and Sisko sends it to the same realm the prophets sent some of the Jem'Hadar that they made vanish in 'Sacrifice of Angels.' All the parasites die after the spawnmother's gone, Sisko returns to linear existence in time for his daughters birth and Bajor joins the Federation.

Not canon, but not badly done either...

IIRC, an outline of a Voyager script called "The Sentry" would have dealt with these aliens. Apparently, they originate from the Delta Quadrant. Of course, the idea was abandoned and nothing came of it.
