It seems that most ship classes in service during the TOS era (2240-2269) and the TMP era (2270-2300) were based from kitbashed and rearranged Constitution Class hull parts. Was the Constitution a base design for all ships of that era? Here's a partial list of canon and non-canon ships based on the Connie - Miranda - Federation - Constellation - Akula - Hermes - Saladin - Okinawa - Ptolemy Notable exceptions include the Excelsior and Oberth. They had nothing in common with the Connie's design. Did Starfleet run out of ship designs during this period or was the Constitution's hull parts so efficient that they could be rearranged and enginnered into all new ships?

It is only the Miranda and Constellation that are canon. Therefore, they probably were based on the Constitution (or the other way around, if we think of the Miranda). It is somewhat the same in later years too.. Think of the Galaxy and Nebula, then the Cheyenne, Freedom, Niagara (based on the Ambassador), New Orleans and even Springfield.

The only thing the Constellation shares with the Connie/Miranda are the nacelles. The saucer section is completely different.
