I'm having a slight, well issue, with SFC3. I'm running the "SFC3 patch 1.01 beta2 build v534_b" on an AMD 32/64 bit Athlon cpu, with 1.5gig ram, Windows XP SP2, with DirectX9.c The issue that i'm having is that whenever i modify the .gf files in the CommonSettings folder, (HullItems.gf, WeaponItems.gf, ShieldItems.gf, PowerItems.gf, BridgeItems.gf), SFC3 fails to start running and i recieve "Starfleet Command III - TNG has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I've tried modify the files using both Excel and Notepad. I've never had any issues doing this in SFC1 or SFC2. Does anyone have any ideas or solutions around this dilemma? Any help would be dearly appreciated!

Firstly thanks for replying! Well it happens if i change any attributes in any of the .gf files in the commonsettings folder (HullItems.gf, WeaponItems.gf, ShieldItems.gf, PowerItems.gf, BridgeItems.gf) For instance lately i've been testing the program using the weaponitems.gf file. In that file i've changed simple things. Firstly i modified the cost, and that would crash it. Then i tried the mass, and the same thing happened. Then it was the health, energy, damage, i even tried changing who owned the dam weapon, yet all my attempts have failed. I have noticed that once i've modified the .gf files the file size changes, only by a kb or 2 I've had no problem modifying the DefaultCore.txt or the DefaultLoadOut.txt files. Last night i even uninstalled SFC3 and reinstalled it from scratch. i modified the weaponitems.gf and changed the cost of the pulse phasers and tried running the game before i applied the beta patch, it would load right up to the main menu screen and it would just crash, no messages would appear this time tho. I had installed the directx 9.c fix tho. It's got me so confused!

hmmmm.... the only thing I can thing of is maybe when you save the file your changing the format or something. If the game doesn't read the file it'll crash. it's just an idea cuz I've never seen this problem before.

Did you try disabling Visual Themes and setting the compatibility to Windows 2000?

Well after a long and stressful process, i can now seem to modify the .gf files. The solution: My partner decided to try using open office to modify the files. He seemed to think that there may have been data strings in the .gf files which excel was most likely stressing out over and removed or modified them as well causing the game to crash. What i can't understand is that notepad seemed to also be crashing the game. Well at least it worked. Altho i haven't updated to the beta patch yet. i'll see how that goes! Thanks for everyone's help and advice :D

Do like Green said and try disabling Visual Themes, then try running the game. Apparently it works, though I've never seen it.

What OS you running Victory? Yeah, Disabling Visual Themes and setting the compatibility to Windows 2000, my game (Fresh install patched to 534b) runs like a dream. Oh, and use WordPad for editing files, works best.
