Does anyone know how the variables in chunkgen odfs work?
I never found the time to work with them to figure them out. They should not be able to alter the geometry of the bits at least "before" they fly appart, but I expected they affect how the bits break apart. Very often ships don't even get released with chunkgen odfs, but some do.
If no one happens to know...
A relatively easy way to test out variations would be for you to setup about 4 ships with identical duplicated m3ds and chunk files and set the settings different for each in the chunkgen odfs. Then start a Skirmish and self destruct them one at at time. Possibly capture it with Fraps to video to review, and try to keep the point of view at the same basic angle for each. If you have an issue with your 4 test ships trying to fly off you can just pick a Larger Map where the enemy craft stay out of the detection radius of the ai long enough to get your testing done. You could then continue to alter the various chunkgen files in various ways until you had a reasonable idea what each value happened to do.
It is something I have wondered about in the past and thought of looking at, but never when I had the time. Good luck.
Good advice. What is fraps?
A screenshot/video capture program for 3d games. For what I suggested the Free version will do just fine for you. It captures to a video format that you can then play back in mediaplayer etc. It's an uncompressed video format so the file gets pretty big pretty fast. I only suggest making the videos as you can review them easily then and pause them etc comparing one set of settings to another.
