Ive tested this on two machines and they have both gaind alot of preformance. The tweak is easy. In the Legacy folder (wherever you installed it to) theres a folder called Shaders, in that theres a folder called PostProcess. DELETE it. The game will then do no Prostprocessing when rendering the graphics and will preform much faster.
The two machines i tested it on are as follows.
AMD Sempron 2800+ 64bit (on XP x64 OS) 1gb DDR 3200 geForce 6800XTream 256mb
FPS before was around 25. After deleting the folder it rose to around 45.
AMD Athlon 2800+ (on XP SP2) 512mb DDR 2700 geForce 6600GT 128mb (Asus clocked)
FPS before around 18. After Deleting its around 30.
The FPS's are during the opening scene in the first mission, the fly by of the scout as it goes into warp.
Who would have thought something so simple would make such a diffrence.

dude awesome ! my game runs much better i can turn my ship around at a seconds notice now instead of lagg and i run under min specs i run a Geforce 5500 graphics card 256 mb a pent D 2.80 ghz 1 gb ram now someone fix that bloody targeting system and i'll be happy at least i wont have to worry about buying a 300 dollar card just to play it :)

i didnt hav the execption porb so i didnt know. Im one of the unlucky ones that have had to wait till Yesterday to actaully get this game as i like in the UK :( (although ive been playing it for a while if you know what i mean lol)

My PC's CPU is under spec - Athlon XP 2200 = 1800Mhz.
Ram = 768
My graphics card is an Excalibur Radeon 9550SE = 256MB.
By sacrificing graphical quality for performance, the game runs really quite smoothly. No lag yet. None. Seriously, none in the slightest.
Heck, loading times are less than 30secs!
For this game, imo, RAM and your graphics card are what need to be equal to or above the spec. CPU equalling or beyond the minimum spec is a bonus.

this might work a little:
open "gui_graphicsSettings.cfg", go to the line

and change it to

it is more for the menu's but might help a little ;)
also you can change the admiral.prf file or create one in the root of legacy,
paste this text in it:

Well, deleting that folder helped (significantly) but unfortunately, not enough :( - A lot less laggy, but not smooth enough to enjoy playing the game.
