:) Hi I'm new at the forum and I was hoping that by registering here I could figure out what I am doing wrong. I keep trying to munge maps and they never work. I also have questions about side creation. I am not actually that interested in creating maps. I am just trying to make one because the stupid Gametoast tutorial for sidemaking uses a custom map. :furious: I would rather just create sides for shipped maps and other modders maps I've downloaded (if possible) I believe it would help me dramatically if someone would just send me an unmunged side (ready to be munged) they created to use as a model. It would really be awesome if a sidemod expert could give me his email address so that I could ask questions as they come up. Anyway I have some really good ideas for sidemods but as of now I don't really know everything I need to get started. In case you are wondering have tried looking faq documentation at Gametoast and I still need some things cleared up.:(

First off welcome to the FF Forums! I hope you took the time to look through the FAQ after joining. It contains the Rules as well as everything else you need to know about here. ;)

Also, please don't call the tutorials on GT stupid. I'm sure a lot of modders worked hard on them to share what they know with everyone else. If its not to your satisfaction leave it at that but please don't cut them down.

Now on to your question. Your first step should always be reading through the Docs that come with the Mod Tools. For one because they are made by the makers of the game themselves and thus are official and easy to use. And second because they are already included with the Mod Tools, you don't need to browse around the internet for them. If you did look through the official Docs you would find a very useful tutorial on how to make custom sides. Its step by step and even has a side you work with as you go along through the tutorial. So its very simple and always worth a try. :)

You already have several; the stock sides are included in the modtools.

And if you didn't bother asking questions at Gametoast and instead just whined that the tutorials are too hard or too comprehensive or whatever, then it would be the better part of valor to register there, describe your situation, and ask for help (because that's where you'll find most of the answers, not here).

If you can't munge a map, you can't munge a side.

Thanks for the welcome! :) Delta 47, First of all, sorry about the complaining. I'm just sort of frustrated and I didn't mean any personal offence to the people creating the FAQs at Gametoast. In regard to the side tutorial with the modtools: Are you talking about the "creating a jedi tutorial"? That one left me with a lot of questions. Also the example uses a jedi and don't really care to create a Jedi. Of course you will say that jedi are just like other units but..... Mav, The problem is that the people who write the tutoricals know so much that they forget to fill in small but crucial details which they don't know they know. :) I don't thing the tutorials are too hard or complex. They just don't answer some of the finer questions I have. When you said I can't munge a side unless I can munge a map were you speaking of my abilities or an technical impossibility? I have the assets for the original sides but they aren't in the right folders to just munge with VisualMunge are they? How do people create side mods which apply to all maps? Do they just munge them as part of a custom map and then take the side files from the munged map folder? Also, how do you create sides with more than the usual number of soldier classes? Hope I can get modding, Crimson Clone

That's fine. I understand how modding can be frustrating sometimes when you don't understand something but people do work hard on tutorials and often leave out the simple steps that all comes back to what the maker of the tutorial knows though and assuming everyone else knows.

The creating a Jedi tutorial was the one I was talking about. It does get kinda confusing because the author does take the long and harder way of doing things when all you really need to do is (in my own little saying) copy, paste, and erase. Referring to the copying of odf's, msh's, etc. and opening them up and replacing the info with the info from the side your working on.

Oh, and forgot to say this earlier you cannot edit anyone's maps except by Hex Editing and even that is limited. Not to mention you should have the approval of the modders who made those maps. Hex Editing is something advanced so I suggest you try making sides for the shipped maps as a start.

I also forgot a wrote out a mini tutorial of my own on how to add custom sides to the shipped maps (considering you already know how to make sides). It was just to a reply to someone's question and not professionally typed out nor is it step by step. If you want you can read it here on LucasForums. Just to note, world and map aren't the same thing. World refers to a project you start, or your three letter mod project. Map refers to a map itself. Simple as that. Just don't get confused with the two terms because I didn't clarify that when I made it.

But I suggest reading that after you find a tutorial that you understand on creating custom sides.

Delta 47 Thanks for the reply and the link to that tut. It looks like it will be very useful to me at some point. Also that forum might be helpful. You might find it hard to believe but I hadn't seen that one before! How limited is that ability to hex edit other peoples maps and sides? Like you mentioned, I am nowhere near ready to try it myself but I was hoping someone would create a sidemod from the sides Master Fionwe used in his Geonosis: 125th Beta. I tried replacing the original side.lvl in SWBF2 with those from the map but it didn't work on most maps, and on the ones it did only some of the soldier classes showed up. I don't think he will really care since he moved on past SWBF2. I know him (who he really is) and I can tell you he is not coming back due to some changes in his life. What does one do in that case? I am not really in contact with him anymore either. This is awful because it means we will never get a finished version of his map. :( Although it would be nice to see his orignial side intact as a mod, I am most interested in his XB-whateveritwas Cannon and his orbital strike. Some of his other effects seem a little....misplaced to me. For example, I think his new EMP grenade effect would be better used in a gungan "boolba". (seriously not maliciously in fact I think it would make an awesome gungan boolba) How do I get in contact with modders whom I wish to ask for source files and permissions? Speaking of sides, (again!) you forgot to answer my question about creating sides with more than six soldier classes. Thanks again and sorry for bugging you like this.

CrimsonClone;4921856Delta 47 Thanks for the reply and the link to that tut. It looks like it will be very useful to me at some point. Also that forum might be helpful. You might find it hard to believe but I hadn't seen that one before!
Well, LucasForums isn't the best place for modding. In fact there hasn't been anything posted in the Modding Section in months.
CrimsonClone;4921856How limited is that ability to hex edit other peoples maps and sides?
For one, the names must be the same length and you cannot add more units for say. You can replace certain troops but you cannot edit them either. I personally have never done this before but I had a good friend who did it on several maps but he's not around anymore.
How do I get in contact with modders whom I wish to ask for source files and permissions?
If their not around there's not much you can do. I don't think its that big of deal if your doing it by yourself and for yourself just as long as you don't release anything whatsoever. Its still good to be on the safe side.
Speaking of sides, (again!) you forgot to answer my question about creating sides with more than six soldier classes.

In the small tutorial I wrote on LucasForums it tells you how to add more units the better way (because there's two ways).

Spoiler: Show

Go into your data_***/common/scripts and open the "setup_teams" lua file and at this part:

local typeList = { "soldier", "pilot", "assault", "sniper", "marine", "engineer", "officer", "special" }

add the names of your extra units, (examples: extra1, extra2, etc). Make sure all your lines and brackets are in place just like it was so it looks like it fits there (remember to leave a space at the end).

6. Go into your lua folder where all your lua's are (common/scripts/***) and open your each lua and add in your extra(s) for each team underneath "special".
