Hi, all, I've just been intrigued by the whole art of modding, and wanted to give it a go. I got a taste of it with Jedi academy and pk3 files, but in BF2...this is tooottally different. I'm guessing the .LVL files are what hold all the configurations for the characters? I did some research and saw there were components like odf and req and downloaded some modding tools, but I'm kinda stuck on how to actually get to the game's settings. *sigh* Why can't it be a pk3? I would like to basically mix up a jedi, say have luke with his normal combo but have mace windu's pound and obi wan's rush attack. Any suggestions?
I didn't make it!
Gametoast.com. What you're describing is known in the BF2 modding world as "combo/animset tweaking" and it can often wield incredibly amazing results (I got together a custom animset for Maul that makes him spin his saber all around his body like a madman! And then twitch it at the end to decapitate a clone! :D) I do not find it difficult, and most people should be able to grasp the very basics quickly enough provided they aren't intimidated by the .combo file's complexity. BTW, I doubt you ever need to edit .lvl files directly. To mod BF2, you edit sets of files in the Modtool's directory, then run a program called Visual Munge which compiles it into a map for you. As mentioned above, Gametoast forums are extremely helpful. I mean it. This thread especially: -= Gametoast.com =- • View topic - The FAQ / Everything You Need Thread Version 2.0 But I would always reccommend starting of with the shipped documents in the Modtools package; they're confusing but semi-neccesary. Welcome to the world of BF2 Modders! :D
Thanks a bunch, fiodis! I'll certainly look into it after I get my homework done :) I'll probably have more questions in the future, although I hope not, haha, so I might post again here.
and btw, may i say I'm a bit marveled at your maul example, hehe. Ah, the possibilities are endless...
so I've been getting through the process in the tutorial, and am now making the .combo file. I wanted to use luke's combo, but can't find the .msh files for it. The tutorial has other msh files, but I was wondering if there is a way to find the others in the game that are not in there. Thanks again for your help!
