As most of you know, I have released texture packs in the past that enhanced the textures and normal maps of many models in EaW and FoC. I am interested in expanding on this, releasing more (even better) textures in packs and to incorporate them into Rise of the Mandalorians. I'm not just talking about 'sharpening' the existing textures either...I mean a full-on redo of most of each model's UV maps and stuff. I'm also interested in really enhancing the normal maps using ZBrush.

Anyway, knowing all of that, here is the deal: I need somebody who is willing to send me EaW and FoC meshes in OBJ format (or FBX...just any format that could be considered 'universal'. OBJ's work best though). This is so that I can work with them in Maya and so they can be imported into ZBrush.

If somebody has already done something like this, let me know where I can get the models! This is quite a large project though so I understand if people aren't willing to convert all the game models...I just thought I'd ask.

Lol. I should have know that you two would be the first to step up to the plate. Thanks guys :)

Filo, check your PM's.

Kalo: You can say that, I won't mind ;) Anyway, LotR aside, is it possible for you to send infantry models to me so I can normal map those? Keep in mind that OBJ format does not preserve rigging or skinning. Any units you send to me will need to be re-rigged and skinned before they can be put back in the game (just using the original rig though so you should't need to create a new rig or anything like that). If you can't do that, at least send the models so I can get some work done on them until I find somebody who can re-rig them and stuff.

Thanks a TON for your assistance guys!

Normal mapping infantry was tried by LoWs Elron/Fosh Jedi and produced heaps of lag, sure you want that?

There are many factors that could have produced that lag... How big were there normal maps? 512x512 or 1024x1024 and beyond? What kind of rig did they have? etc... All of FoC's infantry are normal mapped by default...but not the models that came from EaW. Are the models you speak of available for download anywhere? Maybe I can use theirs as a test to evaluate how well something like this would work.

Not entirely sure, merely going off of what Stewie/Fosh told me. if it were me I'd fake spam infantrys bumpmaps, as in just edit the base texture to look better. but normal map the Heroes and other less seen infantry units.

i would follow Kalo advise on this one Farseer, as it will no doubt lag the piss out of older rigs... and people will stop playing the mod and it will not have a good fan base...

having highly detailed models and texture and large textures will waste need resource in the game (not talking game money :p),

i know i do large detailed textures and higher poly models but the models i do are not massively produced units and it sounds like you are talking about having a go at redoing all the game unit models...

Imo, normal maps on infantry are a waste. You'd only see the detail in cinematic mode, which only bad players use throughout an entire battle. Just make do with the diffuse/gloss map and tweak those to make em look good, and maybe give them more varied animations to make them seem more lively. However, you could probably get away normal mapping the heroes without too much of an impact on performance.

Ok. That may be a better solution.

Yeah, doing all the models is more what I was leaning towards. My goal was to try and bring EaW up to modern standards (to make it on par with games like DoW II or CoH). Expecting it to look completely modern is unrealistic, I know... I'm viewing this side project as more of a portfolio type-thing; a "Hey, look how good I made this old game look" sort of thing. I guess I should also say that I was planning on releasing these textures/models as an idividual pack; something that can be added to a mod if your comp. can handle it (similar to mods like Quarl's Texture Packs for the Oblivion game). Maybe that changes your opinion?

The first part of your post would be correct in most cases (about only seeing the normal maps in "action cam") but I have re-worked the ground camera so that this is not true anymore. The camera in my mod now works more dynamically than EaW's default camera, allowing the player to not only zoom and rotate but to change the camera's pitch/angle. It's very similar to the space camera but tweaked to better suit ground battles and to keep the camera from clipping through the terrain. Anyway, this allows players to get very up close and personal if they choose to; a good place to bring in normal maps.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback everyone. I still want to do this though. I think, however (based on what you all have said) that releasing these new models/textures would be done best through individual packs...making them an optional addon for higher-end comps.
