I've heard when of people making hero icons by taking a picture from the moveis, a comic book or Wookiepedia. Then putting them in Photoshop where the image is resized and the background is erased the putting the picture in the game as an icon, is this legal, i'm asking because if it's illegal to take a floor pattern from Kotor 2 and put it in Kotor 1 wouldn't making hero icons ths way also be illegal I know taking the floor pattern from Kotor 2 and putting it in Kotor 1 is porting but I can't tell if making Icons this way is porting. Please explain I'm sorry I keep asking if something is legal. I'm still looking for answers to my question in the Warlords Models thread Thanks I'm just being cautious sinceI don't want to download an illegal mod

To my knowledge its a very "grey area". Most images you see on the net as generally available under a "fair use" policy. However, I would suggest if you get any images from a website see if the website has any kind of rules about the usage of their image files. If not your best bet is to try to contact the sites owner to be on the safe side.

The best way of making icons is making it out of the shot from alo viewer.

Nobody will send cops to infiltrate your house if you publicly use a little 32x32 image from the movie, that's for sure ;)

There are no illegal mods on EaW Files. Legality is always checked before posting a submitted file.

And even if you had an illegal mod on your disk, no one's gonna arrest you for that (I still have Nomada_Firefox's "Alliance 2.0" mod which has TONS of ported models and I feel fine)

even if I won't get in trouble I still don't want to use an illegal mod because it's still wrong and I really only want to use a legal mod, and when I heard of a mod getting the pictures for it's hero icons, from the movies, comics and Wookiepedia I wanted to make sure it's legal. thanks

As MP said, it's a grey area. Although technically films are copyrighted, a lot of their images - including both official pics but also screenshots - are used in the public domain. It's not piracy if that's what you're talking about, and it's completely fine to use - you could even call it promotional material for the film in question.

Since comics are a visual-only media, I'd be more wary of using them. Aside from the legality issue though I'd personally avoid using comic images anyway since they aren't as good as film images.
