I think I've done a good job of not being a terribly annoying beggar, but unfortunately there are some things I simply haven't got the resources for. For instance 3DSmax. See, I'm playing with an idea of mine... I want a way to give ships shielding that can be used to hide smaller ships from enemy fire, kicking up the on-the-spot strategic options a bit so they aren't limited to hoping something will move fast enough to hopefully save it. The most obvious way of doing this is to give a few capital-class ship models huge shield meshes, but that isn't entirely practical and could be time consuming. So I started thinking of a fast and relatively simple workaround so I could ask someone with Max to make it for me and not inconvenience them, leading to the question at hand; Is it possible to just make an invisible model with a shield mesh big enough to fit, say, an Impstar Deuce, and then somehow set it up so either the main ship uses that as it's own shield mesh? Or would it just automaticaly see "Oh hey, there's a shield mesh!" and you could simply ignore the original with the invisible model large enough to overlap it? If either of those are possible, then I have a request. I'd like to know if anyone can make said invisible model with a star destroyer sized egg-shaped shield mesh?
do you mean you want a shield ship to guard units or something, if you do i think it is very posable. unfortanatly i dont have 3ds but if your lucky someone else might make it.
I'm well aware it's possible to make an entirely new ship meant to shield units, and I'm glad you got the basic idea of the thread, but no that's not what I want. I don't want just one ship that does this, and I don't want someone to go through twenty models and give them a massive shield mesh manually. I'm just trying to get an invisible model, with a really big invisible shield mesh. Thas' all. One model that I can circulate between ships. But I don't know if that's possible yet.

What exactly do you mean by this?
It's definitely possible to make a shield-projecting ship with a huge shield, but you can't transfer a shield from ship to ship. It could be "attached" to other ships with the "Guard" command, but if it has no model other than the shield it'd be invisible and kind of a bitch to find and use in-game.
That's not quite right. As I said, I want to use the invisible model with just a shield mesh. Then I would use the model and attach it as a hardpoint to a ship, and my theory is that I could find a way to get the ship I attached the hardpoint to to use the shield mesh on hardpoint's model. I just have no idea how exactly to get it to work.
ohhh i think i get it. so you want an invisable model with a big shield mesh then you want to be able to attach it on a model like a hard point, great idea and i think its posable too.

When I hear how this would work it reminds me of Star Trek where ships can extend their shields around another ship to protect them.
Yes, Ash, that was one of the things that originally gave me the idea. That and Stargate. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like anyone ever thought it would be a good idea for the offense-minded Captains and Admirals of StarWars, but I think it would be a great new tactical factor for things. Just one example; using a frigate with large shields to defend a few corvettes in GC, preventing excess losses.
thats exectly the kind of thinking that makes great mods.

As I remember it from Arbiter and Codeuser from the Thrawns Revenge Staff chat is as follows : Upon being put on a space vessel it would mess with your selection box. As to say ; If you tried to select the ship, it would most likely select the "bubble" instead of the actual ship. Which of course leads to complications.
But by all means keep trying to find a way around that.
