Is it possible to modify the GC AI so its actually a decent opponent? I mean like make it pack valuable planets with mining facilities so it actually has credits to play with, make it build more balanced fleets/armies, make it fortify border worlds, make it build high level space stations on shipyard worlds so it can build capital ships etc... I would attempt to do some of these things myself but I have no idea how to mod the AI. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is difficulty "hard" not enough? I know it is possible to do this but I have no knowledge of it myself.

Yes you can do it, through different tweaks, it does not suit everyone though however. Some people seem to like the AI the way it is. Me I like it to be more of a challenge. There is an AI mod out there on EAW Files, I think it was made by Dark Lord. So look for that - it should maybe give you more of an interesting game.

I have redone most of the AI for my 3.5 mod... look for it this weekend. The AI is INCREDIBLY smart now.

The main problem isnt the aggressiveness of the AI, its the fact that they spam all their planets with heavy factories and dont build any mining facilities. This means they hardly have any credits to build attack fleets

ahh ok then I think to remedy the problem you could give each player higher starting credit's and in planets.xml file - increase the credit values for each planet, the AI will generate more of an income then from its starting planets it does have.

And you can try doing some work with AI combat power, that will have them make better desicions on what units to attack :teach:
