Hello Community: Does anyone know the files associated with, or has ever attempted to change the appearance of the Tractor Beam used by the Star Destroyers? In all the movies and novels I have read, trator beams were always described as being invisible forces, not ever green and yellow zig zagged lines. This has always been something that has bothered me and now I wish to change it. I want the tractor beam to resemble the beam in this attached photo. I have located a texture file named: Tractor_beam00, but I am uncertain as how this is used, since the texture has no color and does not look like the tractor beam used in the game. Does anyone know how this texture file is used, and how it can be replaced with a new file/animation? My idea is to have a blue/white hazy transparent beam slowly extend towards the target ship from the star destroyer, but if the animation cannot be created, just the blue/white beam instead of the currenty yellow/green pulsing one. Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated. Also, for a future idea, just to any modelers out there who are seeking a new project, if someone would ever create the Kaloth Battle Cruiser, I think that this would be a great unit to add to the Consortium. It definately would have a unique advantage, since it would be the only frigate sized ship in the game to have the tractor beam ability... Just a wishful thought......

Take a look at LightningEffectTypes.xml and go to the tractor beam entry. What you want should be there.

No. Only weapons. I haven't changed tractor beam, shield leech beam and other lightning-based ones..

Thanks for the info, I will look into that xml file.

If what I want can be done, I'll post a final screenshot here and release it later on filefront.

Off the top of my head I remember mention somewhere of there being an entry about it in the Gameconstant.xml thingy. Somewhere there should be a line about the color of tractor and energy beams, with RGBA numbers to be used. The entry in Lightningeffects.xml only controls the lines swirling AROUND the beam. In theory you could create a new entry with no offsets and a very thick line, so it would just look like a beam. But it would instantly tie to the target; you could control how many lines of lightning there are and how long it takes for them each to spawn, but they spawn and tie to the target instantly.

yeap, the game engine creates beams like the proton beam and tractor beam by drawing a line from one target to the next and adding the lighting effects around it. So in theory its impossible to make it slowly extend towards the target.

ONE thing you might want to look into though, is the black hole LUA script created by Jesusfreak on AlphaBlue, it basically pulls ships slowly towards the object with the script, and Im sure with a bit of tweaking it can be applied to tractor beams.

if it helps, i believe ROTM has a similar-looking modified tractor beam. might want to reverse-engineer from ROTM :)
