One of IG-88's special abilites can also damage on your side... I've had a look and I can't find anything that is specific to damaging friendly units... So I was wondering if anyone else knew how its done???

Uhm, I haven't noticed it yet... But it's maybe coded in the ability (the hard-coding is stored in the ERXE if I'm right).

I've looked at the ability already... But I didn't see anything that seemed to be about it...

:/ I can't seem to find any code string that causes the ability to damage friendly units either...

does the ability create a damage reigon which is neutral/hostile so therefore all sides are hurt by it?

Because from what I've read - there are two things preventing frinedly fire - one is that you cannot target allied units and two, particularily visible in area-of-effect attacks - allied projectiles cannot hit allied units. Therefore, if a projectile that has area-based damage is neutral or hostile, it can hurt both allies and enemies. A damage reigon (a la asteroid field) works as well.
