If anyone has played the RTS Endwar then you see where I am getting the idea from. I was wondering if It is possible to have your infantry take cover or use the terrain to gain a health advantage on the battlefield instead of using the take cover ability. Here's how I would imagine it to work in game: you move your cursor over to a group of rocks and the cursor sign changes and you would right click and your infantry would move over to that area, use the take cover animation, and take less damage. I don't know if this idea may work as it may have to have a new AI engine but I don't know. Can someone please help me with this if it is possible:confused:? Thanks for your help in advance.

It *might* be possible with LUA, considering the game has a "high ground" terrain option to begin with. I wouldn't be able to do it, though.

The engine is pretty strictly hard-coded, major gameplay changes like this are usually impossible in Empire at War. There is the "high ground" terrain in the maps, usually surrounded by a sandbags and barricades prop, which essentially already does this, but without the awesome animations. Sith of Steel might be right, anything is possible with LUA, but you'd need to be a super genius and have a lot of experience to figure something like that out. If there was some way to trigger the 'take cover' ability when an infantry unit enters a 'high ground' cover area....

You're all wrong. Try looking at the ground cover props, they provided these things. And the props that also provided negative attributes (Weather afflictions, like how the water would slow you down, or grass would too).

So it is possible to do this?? I am sorry if my question was answered but I didn't understand. I was think of using the good ground bonus but applying it to the take cover area selected. I just don't like when you hit the take cover ability in the middle of a field and get less damage just because you're crouching. I want it to be on the cursor and you would right click that area. How would I go about creating this? Thanks for everyone's feedback

If I remember correctly, the props don't control anything in this case. It's an attribute applied to the terrain in the map editor, the props are just placed around the areas of 'high ground' to show the player where they are. Unless the terrain attribute and the prop provide separate aspects of the feature...

Most likely not, but possibly possible if you've got someone with a lot of experience and imagination working on it.

Actually, Kalo may be right. The Take Cover animation uses a similar code to the Falcons invincibility. It reduces damage, if that could be added to Props, and terrain a similar effect could be achieved. As how to do this, I don't know. Very interesting idea...

If they were dud props, if they were I could understand your reasoning. Not only that, but there's other ways to do this. One way to do it is to look at the Repulsor Lift Jammer, IIRC there's a way to make it apply to well, anything. So you could put these in certain areas and slow units down. So if they go up hill they lose momentum. In addition, you could probably add the weather ability that slows vehicles down to it. Seeing as how you can add weather damage abilities to heroes (Like how Lava planets damage infantry).

If the good ground area is made in map editor then it would be easy to make my idea work (somewhat). I looked through the original empire at war maps (none of the FOC maps seem to have good ground anymore, replaced by bunkers?) and there is no markers or anything in the good ground area. I think it is coded into a xml somewhere. I am probably wrong but I am still looking. I was wondering if anyone who knows how the good ground area works could please explain to how it works to me. Thanks

I never meant to say that it was impossible to trigger the attributes, I was more so referring to the idea that the Take Cover animation would trigger automatically upon entering certain areas.
