The MDU Realistic Build Options Mod got me thinking of this (and incidentally didn't know it until I read the comments on its build limitations), but I'd love to see more mods like this, perhaps individualized more i.e. mk 1s 2s and 3s etc. to make up for the 6 or whatever build options a single one has to spread roles out better.

One that has the specials not included being its own could be an additional mk model, and another feature I noticed in a separate mod that really sounded appealing was the ability to create mobile drop zones to augment or get around the fixed ones that require capture.

Likewise it might be cool to see more of the fixed build pad options along these same lines transferred over from whatever you could do with the MDU examples. (an example here I was thinking of was a smaller version of a fixed landing zone, to allow for 1, 2, or 3 reinforcement level, but what could be built for the unit could be in the form of an anti air or artillery piece so the position could be minimally defended if left unattended, or it could be a sensor scrambler type to hide it from view until scouted). So combining some functions in some cases could make all the difference in terms of balancing combat or adding more strategic elements.

Also in skirmish I notice the AI won't make use or almost never deploy MDUs at all, so perhaps converting what you can do with fixed build pads can make up for that shortfall (if the AI is more likely to build these things with fixed build pads instead).

Anyway, I site this mod as one of my favorites because it takes a single unit and makes it more useful, and generally speaking, I'd love to see more modders or TC makers release some of their favorite units from their bigger packages as stand alones where possible too. If nothing else, for teaser elements for their bigger projects.

Just a few random thoughts from someone who wishes he had the time to do this sorta thing for himself :)

Sounds like a cool mod if it's on filefront then could you give me a link. also i've dont this for foc for myself! but i never realesed it this sounds more professonal too i would love to see this kind of thing. alsothat idea sounds great with the MDU's and reinforcementpoints but that counters the popcap of the mdus them selvs! so an add pop cap of one for them sounds good. unfortunetly i dont have the time for mods this involved. :(

Sorry about that:

MDU Realistic Build Options, Star Wars: Empire at War Downloads, Star Wars: Empire at War FoC Mods

Its great as far as stripping out the specials like the ysalimiri (sp?) cage etc., and just leaving you with useful bits, like the weapons, and stuff like shields a repair station, the sensor scrambler and the offensive sensor node.

Its funny, I used this mod while playing through the campaign, and the one time I think I needed the cage it was the mission where you had to get off of Coruscant and there was a dissappering/reappearing jedi you had to get around first near the end prior to getting aboard the juggernaut. Otherwise, I tended to rely on brute force to deal with jedis and sith.

Also its all good if some people don't have the time, there'll bound to be folks that can squeeze some in that an idea like this could be useful to. Anyway, just wanted to give a shout out to the author of the mod and let them know I thought it was well done and hopefully inspire some ideas.

I have codded MDU's so that i can build Sensor nodes (reveal fog of war on entire map) mobile landing zones (like mentioned above) and mobile sheild generators for all teams its realy easy 2 do

That'd be cool Shadow.

I was thinking too for these things, might be cool to experiment with their squad count i.e. whether 3 or 4 MDUs wouldn't have been a little more balanced (depends I suppose from stock game or mod to mod) over the default 2.

For example, I find that with the Realistic Build version with the weapons, I often like to set up between 5 and 6 in combo with other units to make ambush pockets. Or maybe the other way to go would be to boost the weapons on the MDU and keep the squad the same size.
