How can I add shadows to a model in 3ds Max 8? I have added a shadowmesh with the meshshadowvolume shader, but the shadow doesn´t look realistic in the alo.viewer. When I reimport the model, 3ds Max shows a Runtime error: couldn´t load dds.

That probably means you have a hole in your mesh. To fix it, try using the "Cap Holes" modifier on it. It wont always work thought, but it should help.

as for the loading problem, it could be two things:

1- Did you place ALL the model's skin files into the texture directory you specified in the Importer?

2- If you have, but it still doesnt work, convert the skins into tga format and try again.

To your first answer: cap holes didn´t work

To your second answer: Yes, I have all files in the right folder and with the .tga-files it didn´t work either.

If import another model and give it the same texture, the shadows work normally.

Here´s a picture of my model to give a better impression of the problem.
