Anyway there are some tricks that would make battles much more effective. I.e. muzzle flashes. What are they? Simple sprites appearing for a second. Now take a look at Krayt destroyer megacannon projectile. When it fires we can see a real FLASH. It would be just pure ownage if all the turbolaser fired like this.
Other thing - explosions. When projectiles detonates the only thing which appears is a litlle, tiny, funny particle. Is that what Petro calls destruction? When ion cannon affects shield there should be famous ion disablement effect, and when turbolasers hits the hull with no shield there should be DAMAGE.
And last one - when larger explosion appears.. well.. I don't know if that's possible but screen should be for just half a second about 20% brighter. It looks much better.
I was playing around with projectiles all week. Using Mike particle editor, combing existing particles gives you some interesting results. Made all sorts of new rockets as well. Tell me what you think of this:

They're surely much better than stock ones. But I want something so I can hardly see difference between the movie and game. And I know it's possible.
Oh, and thank you for reminding Particle Editor. How dumb I was to forget that? I spent entire previous day having fun with projectiles :D
