Well basically, these are questions specific to GMAX and 3d Studio Max. I am not asking HOW do to modeling but rather what some basics are of modeling. Ok, here goes...

1) Using those programs, do you just put shapes together (neatly, of course) and ultimately put settings how you want them? I know there's a bunch of fancy stuff you can do to touch up a model, but is there really more to it?

2) Once you have what you want made, how do you prepare it to be turned into those gray ones I always see in unskinned sample screenshots? How do you actually turn it into that gray one? Can you test it in-game without the animations (given that you have the proper file conversion tools)?

3) Does it matter within what X, Y, and Z coordinates your model resides in? Also, how do you know what size your model needs to be for certain games (are those sizes in certain units, like meters)? Can't you just scale the model once it's all finished anyway?

I'll ask you guys some more questions once they come to me. I'm trying to keep my questions general for it to be easy for any experienced modelers to respond. Thanks!

well.....to #1 basically yes just modify it enough so it looks like what you want it to look like add verts here and there a cut here, extrude there.....etc just keep at modeling long enough and you'll get the hang of it...i started modeling nearly a year ago and kept making these low quality models until now i'm doing ok models

#2: well, you could modify the color i guess but you could also apply a default material

#3: yes it matters make sure it's coordinates are at 0,0,0 and have it face front

i'm no expert at modeling (talk to wildcat or evillejedi if you want to meet one) but that's just what i do.....but i think it's safe to say that some of my models have turned out alrightish

google for tutorials for better tips and so on a good low poly modeling, UV mapping, and skinning tutorial is at www.proclone.net it was meant for gmax and CnC generals, but most of the info there can be applied to 3ds max

The way you say that it makes it sound like he cusses a lot. And yes Bailknight, Wildcat, and EvilleJedi are all good people to talk to.

I've talked to him a bit on LF
