What kind of units are we talking about, new just modelled models, reskinned models, or something else?

You must copy all the used textures into your "modname/data/art/textures" folder.

sadly it wont work, they keep appearing as unskinned. =P some people tell me they need to be put on in AOL view or something, what about that? Some ships automatically have them on them in AOL viewer

Are you playing the standard game, a released mod, or your own mod?

I guess i'll try to reword this, sorry if im not getting through but i dont know what to do to help you help me.

What i was thinking is that you put all the files in the right folders such as the ALO's in the Models, Textures in the Textures, and Buttons where they go, then in the XML for a unit it will have

RV_NEBULONB.ALO and other model references, but what links the unit's texture that you put in the TEXTURE folder to that unit? is that in an XML or something else?

and again i've seen ships with skins in ALOViewer and some with petroglyph written all over them.

Open up the Alo viewer, go to "Files" "Details" then look for the main mesh. if you click on it it tells you which texture is attached to the model... alo.png

Now if you need to make it a unique unit you can open the .alo model file with a hex editor(I use xvi32, a free hex editor, google it,) and change the name of the texture. Make sure you use the same number of letters in the name of the texture or it will screw up the .alo file. EX: 12345.dds to 23456.dds

When you see the petroglyph texture on the model that means the game engine could not find the texture coded in the .alo model file, in the appropriate texture folder.
