Greetings to everyone at the forums! :cya: For years I have been modding Quake 3 engine games, JK2 being my favorite by far, but as newer Star Wars games come along, I'm starting to think it needs a real makeover. There's still a lot of life in JK2 in my opinion...single player game is great, multiplayer is a ton of fun...but it just seems to need some engine updates, in my opinion. Already I have implemented a few updated DLL files, but they alone don't yield a very noticeable difference in performance, and I would like to do more. First of all, the lighting in JK2 just seems a bit...unrealistic somehow. I think it needs some real light blooming, but I'm not sure if that's possible in the Quake 3 engine. Second, the lightsaber combat needs updated...after playing JK3, the stab move and a few others are sorely missed in JK2. After that we'll just see what needs to be done, but it is far to big a job for just one person, so I'm looking to see if anyone would like to help with this project, and if so how. Since ID Tech 3 is open source, perhaps we could even port JK2 over to that type of engine and update stuff from there?

Some of the older players still prefer 1.02 over the other patches as it is. I don't know, I think JK2 is fine as it is.

Lighting in JK2 well um JA kinda updated a lot of the things from JK2 while also implementing bugs at the same time. Err anyway. JK2 saber feels pretty balanced whenever I play. Instead of red spam you get overall saber spam from each stance. Can't forget those super skilled playas with there scripts and threatning to hax you. :lol:

Why would anyone want to change that :p

You shouldn't use the 4 letter word starting with p unless you intend to draw Mikouen's attention, in which case chances are the thread will be closed. But seriously, why put that much effort in an outdated engine? I've heard of a Star Wars mod for HL2 going by the name "The New Era", and they're planning to implement a lightsaber system from scratch. If I were a coder interested in swordplay, I'd rather spend my time there.

A Star Wars mod for HL2 sounds cool, but unfortunately I don't have that game, so I can't exactly participate in that... personally I think it is much more fun to try and make an old engine run like a new one than to just make a new engine do something different, so that's why I'd spend time on JK2. Besides, Raven was able to expand the capabilities of Quake 3 so that it met the requirements for then-modern games, so why could it not be done again? It would just take the right team of people to do it...

Sure it could be done after finding the right people. But it means much more work to invest, to get features into the old engine that are already there in newer engines. Doesn't really pay off, IMO.

Have you ever played Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight? There was a mod for it that came out (in 2002, after the release of JK2, I believe) called JK Enhanced. It didn't update the engine directly, but it did wonders for the graphics in the game nevertheless, and people continued to be interested in the mod and the game for the few years following. DF2 came out in 1997, the mod came out in 02. Six years between them. JK2 came out in 02, it is now 08. Six years again, and JK2 has MUCH more interest than DF2 did...I believe an engine update would be quite worth it. Is there anyone interested?

For what you mentioned you want to do, that sounds like a one person job.... sounds like you just want to insert some jka source code into jk2. The sources are readily available... .. you can even find them on jk2files.com... :eek:

It would be if I knew how to do everything...I figured neither I nor some other one person would know how to create appropriate EXE/DLL files, shaders, expanding Quake 3 polygonal limits, better lip-syncing, etc...the thing is, the way I see it, no other Star Wars game has had as good of a saber combat/force system as the Jedi Knight series, but it has fallen behind simply because certain things have gone 'out of date' (i.e. the graphics engine). I can do a lot of the stuff it would require, but not all of it...:uhm:

I'm talking engine update/modification...so that would affect both sp and mp
