I'm making my first map and everything's fine except when I get to the .pk3 process (using jk3):

1: I can't get the map to appear on the "create game" list, I can only load it by using the console!

2: I can't get my custom music to play when I load up the map! The console says it can't find a music file!!!

PLEASE! Any help you can give here would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, To be able to load the map from the menu, you need to create an .arena file. Copy the following text into WordPad/Notepad and modify it accordingly:

{ map "The name of your .map file" longname "The name shown in the menu" type "Game type" }

Then save the it as an .arena file and move it to the scripts folder.

I hope this helps you.:)

To put music on your map create a folder called Music in your base then put the music you want to play on your map in the folder. Then open up Radiant and select a worldspawn (just a regular brush like a wall) and type a key of Music and a value of music/yourmusic.mp3. Then compile your map and it should play the music.

Thank you for the help, but now it says "unable to find mymusic.mp3 as an explicit track or music entry" (or something like that)

I have an arena file, but it still doesn't appear on my menu selection! The text document looks like this:

{ map "TheForgottenReliquary" longname "^7Reliquary" fraglimit 10 type "ffa" }

Incidentally, my pk3 looks like this:

>Botroutes >>>None yet, I plan to make later >Levelshots >>>TheForgottenReliquary.jpg >Maps >>>TheForgottenReliquary.bsp >Models >>>Folder Empty >Music >>>TheForgottenReliquary.mp3 >Scripts >>>TheForgottenReliquary.arena >Shaders >>>Folder Empty >Sound >>>Folder Empty >Textures >>>Folder Empty Thank you for your help!!!

Custom MP3s have to be saved with 44100Hz, 128kbps, stereo encoding.

You can use Wavepad to change them to that. Get the download link for Wavepad from the Master Sticky in the Jedi Academy Modding & Editing section.

Woot, color coding time.

{ map "mapname" longname "My Map" type "ffa" }

Red = the name of the bsp file, without the .bsp.

If you made a subfolder within the maps folder and put it in there, you have to add the folder (i.e. if the full path to my file was maps/food/mymap.bsp, I'd have to put "food/mymap").

Green = the name of the map as you want it to appear on the in-game menu. Self-explanatory.

Yellow = the gametypes it will appear under in the in-game menu. I can see two things wrong which might be in the way with yours (because the Q3 engine is picky).

Spaces. Try deleting the spaces between the quotes and FFA, so that it says "ffa".

Case. I'm not sure if this actually matters, since I do it lower case by default, but it's worth a shot to try making yours lowercase.

So, yeah, try those little things out and get back to us. Sometimes the little things make all the difference. I can't really think what else it could be right now, to be honest. 3:50am and a big workload. v_v

My new .arena file is like so:

{ map "TheForgottenReliquary" longname "TheForgottenReliquary" type "ffa" }

...but my map still won't appear!!!

My .pk3 is now:

botroutes.....(folder empty) levelshots....TheForgottenReliquary.bsp maps..........TheForgottenReliquary.bsp music.........TheForgottenReliquary.mp3 scripts.......TheForgottenReliquary.arena

I CAN load my map from the pk3, but it still refuses to list it on the menu (I have to devmap it to make it work). Everything above is exactly as it appears in my pk3, spaces and all -- if you have any ideas, please share them!

First, maybe you have too many other maps installed? The game does limit the amount it shows on the menu.

Second, try shortening the filename. I don't think you're over the limit, but I'm not sure exactly what the limit is.

Third, double-check to make sure your .arena file really is a .arena, rather than a .arena.txt. A lot of people make that boo-boo.
