The normal version is like it is in the second... But the movie is drawn without real people(actors) so it's not hard to make mistakes in it...

Well, DUUUUUUUUH! yeah. Jose Carlos MADE TWO Tsurugi packs. But wasn't very satisfied with either one, so decided to make a third.

Jose CarlosNo. I mean this plate near the hand guard, which seems to have gone missing between that scene and this one.

in the first scene the sword is open, in the second, its closed. i think it drops into the hilt when hes adding some of the other swords.

Jose Carlos

Why? Cause normal is boring.

If it does drop, it also has to rotate 90 degrees.. It's just too long for the guard to cover it. But I doubt it has much room to drop, since the hilts of the jagged and hollow swords lock into the guard.

Okay did some research on the web and must say found something interesting... Square's bloopers are in it to... At first I haven't seen a good shot of the closed vigilante so maybe you should check this

Now I also found someone else who modelled the blades... This is his screen of the vigilante closed

Now that is off the track... The rest of the blade... At first you asked those plates... Well it's one of the bloopers from Square... Basicly as you can see in the lowest screenshot it has the plates on the Vigilante in opened version... So they just missed it out again in that scene

The arrows on it are from the full asembly... Link below... So your problem is solved since it's basicly Square screwing it up...

Now to say this... Square did more than one blooper... The link here shows them as well as the full assembly from the blade... where I got pics and info from... So maybe usefull...

Cloud's sword full info

Also here you can find the model picture as the rest of the blade... Models of the blade

Old'd.

That diagram was posted back in the stone age.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

I based the first two versions on that diagram. BIG mistake, I know.. I found those models a while ago, that's where I figured out that the Vigilante's core could be built with six-sided cells. As for the different ways Square fudged with the swords... There's more than we know, I'd bet.
