Hello and good morning :P I've been playing JA and JO for some time now, but I only recently took an interest in HOW I get all these delightful toys of destruction. My goal here is to replace one of the default sabers, single_1, with the model of cable_saber, a delightful sword/saber hybrid that I think would look very nice.

I co-lead a clan, and so you might be asking, "why not just upload the files themselves and save yourself the trouble?" Well, a number of reasons. First and foremost, I don't know if these sabers have any custom damages on them, but I DO know that I'm not going to take that risk. Secondly, and most importantly, I'd like to get the experience on my own of working with saber files and such.

My attempts so far have been to open the cable saber.pk3 in PakScape and try to replace the name as single_1 and rename the sword to "^7Exile's ^4Blade", with the hopeful end result of having a cool swordish thing that I can give to my clanmates, and still keep the regular saber damages.

Now, when I go to edit the cable_saber.sab file in notepad, I make all the changes (using that delightful tutorial listing the things you can do to .sab files) and then hit save...and nothing saves. I, grimacing, attempt to save the pk3 as a whole. No change.

Could someone please point out to me what I'm doing wrong? A good friend of mine had a sword made for him in the same fashion, replacing a default saber, and I looked at the code in an attempt to emulate it, but I simply cannot save my changes.

Please, help me, I'm a noob and I cannot mod!

Why? Cause normal is boring.

What you're doing wrong is that you're opening the wrong .sab file. Get the single_1.sab from the assets1.pk3 and edit that. Rewrite the model line to point at the hilt you want to use. If you want to edit its name, though, then you'd have to go digging through the menu files.

The fact remains that I cannot save my changes. I attempt to save this new saber_1.sab file from the assets_1.pk3, and it doesn't save my progress...at all. I reopen the file I just edited, and behold! No changes...

There must be something simple I'm missing.

You can't save to files while they are still inside the pk3. They need extracting, editing, then reinserting.

Pakscape will help with the extraction and reinsertion, as you can just drag specific files from the Pakscape window into any other folder window (such as the My Documents folder).

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

also, dont overwrite anything in the assets, make it a new pk3, the game will look at that over the assets, changing the original assets files is a bad idea.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, I'll be trying out your various solutions after a much-needed sleep break :P

Let me just say this...wow!

After getting a friend to walk me through it, I realized that my problem was my lack of how the heck pk3's work! He gave me sort of a mini-tutorial on how to replace a default saber, and it's surprisingly easy, I just lacked the know-how.

I saved the convo, so I can call on that knowledge later if I have to.

Thanks to everyone for their help and support! Not sure if I'll upload the finished product though, unless someone would like me to? I really just made it to mess around, but it turned out very nicely.

Thanks again everyone!
