Would I be able to make a playermodel in gmax, then export it to a model type that that XSI can import, and then rig the playermodel in XSI without any problems?

im PRETTY sure gmax and mod tools have .3ds support so you should give that a shot. all your rigging will have to be done in XSI since there isnt a skeleton for gmax, it doesnt support a import/export file type to carry the JA skeleton over to it.
