Hi guys.

Okay I basically got 2 issues I'd love to get answered.

Case 1) DotProduct2, how does it work? I have the example pack from the SimonOC site, but I can't make my own custom textures work.

I've copied the shaders and replaced path and filename with my own, same goes for the alpha 'pole' thingys that u stick between the terrain blocks.

Now here is what I don't get: 1) What is the use of func_group in all of this? 2) How do I apply an alpha channel to my textures?

For nr 2, I have tried it, and this is how I did it (not a clue if it's correct): Opened the image, clicked on the CHANNELS tab, made the white Alpha 1 thingy visible, then saved again as TGA with alpha channel checked on.

Case 2) Is q3map2/q3map2: (final) BSP -meta, -vis, -light -fast -filter -super 2 -bounce 8 the best BSP option? If not, then what is? I know how to add a self-defined one, but I don't know what all of the commands do.

Thankful for any insight. :)

Q3Map2 - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks

That has lots of info on some of the commands for q3map2, particularly in the section called minor switches. There's 3 links in that section to the bsp, light, and vis commands. Worth a quick read.

Thanks, I've looked into that. And I have to ask this:

Is it okay to ditch 'filter' fully and use 'samples' instead? Also use -shade and -patchshadows on a regular basis might be neat.

Regarding dotproduct2: I know that my q3map2 is updated to 2.5.16, which supports this. But I still can't make it work, I don't know why.

It would be really nice if someone could explain the use of func_group in this (are all parts of the terrain made into one group, or each section.. etc)

The whole terrain and the alpha poles that belong to that set of terrain go into one func_group together.

Szico VII's site is usually where I point people to when trying texture blending with alpha mod poles, but the site is dead now (again).. unless it has a new address.

I can pm you the source files of his terrain blending tutorial map with working textures and shaders if you'd like.

Thanks, I tried this now again and I can see that the shaders are starting to blend partially, except for the 'main' one which remanins unchanged.

I'm assuming that this could be an alpha channel issue.

Is it difficult to add an alpha channel to a tga image in photoshop or gimp for that sake?

Not at all; In Photoshop CS4 all you need to do is open your image, go to Save As, then save it under the file format "Targa".

save_as_tga1.jpg

Then a dialogue will popup after that with some options, just make sure you select "32 bits/pixel" and make sure that "Compress (RLE)" is UNCHECKED.

save_as_tga2.jpg

And that's all there is to it. Just make sure your textures' dimensions are in powers of 2 (512x512, 256x1024, 16x256, etc.) or they won't work in Jedi Academy.
