i think making a Balamb Garden from final fantasy 8 map would make a wicked mod, if done right it would be really good as an rpg server, kinda like a final fantasy version of sithcouncil :) (btw i cant map :P)

Balamb!?! That'd Be Awsome!!! I really don't see why not, I mean someone already made a FF7 Midgar map three times. A Balamb Garden mod would really be awsome...

The sheer amount of curves and patches would either kill the game, or kill your FPS so much that JKA will be unplayable. Don't forget the brush count limit and entity count limits, which would be far beyond the level the Q3A engine can handle. Either your game would crash, or you'd lag like a tranquilised corgi puppy.

I think it'd be a sweet map, but it just isn't practical from a performance point of view.

On another note, I think it's suffice to say that Midgar v3 isn't a "Midgar" map per sé, more of a Midgar-themed map. Think derivative works. :)

in theory the maps possibe, i'd say if your going your build it, build parts of the interior only. you might be able to get away with some of it that way.

Oh, it can be built, no one's saying it can't.

But Hell's Precipice will freeze over before any Q3 engine game can run a map which consists of that many curves. I mean, Balamb Garden has more damn curves than SJC's Senate map. :uhoh:

And besides, GtkRadiant would lag like hell after you'd done a few areas, it always does when a lot of curves, bevels and patches are used - hence why I avoid using them mostly.

In fact, considering Balamb Garden is practically made of curves, it'd probably kill Radiant before you got 50% of the way through it. The only Balamb Garden map you could ever make for JKA, is one that looks nothing like Balamb Garden.

I'd also like to note, that all of the areas in FF7/FF8 are basically pre-rendered backgrounds (i.e. practically just JPGs that the characters run around on top of), so most of the areas are impossible to build in mapping software since they weren't designed to be mapped - heck, when FF7 and FF8 came out, there were no map editors capable of making environments like that.

FF9 and FFX mostly can be replicated if you're skilled enough, because those were actually created as environments (although there was some pre-rendering there too), but you'd have to use a far more powerful and complex map editor such as UnrealEd v3, because, quite frankly, GtkRadiant can be described with the same 4-letter "S" word as the Q3 engine.

You have to remember that Q3 engine is an absolute piece of crap. Unreal 2 may be able to handle it, or any of the Source games, but Q3, EF, JKA, SoF2 (etc etc) definitely can't.

aww thats a real shame, well like i said i cant map so i know little to nothing about it. and yes i would have to agree with you, with what your saying if a balamb garden map was made it would look nothing like balamb garden. well there are other gardens/sEED schools in FF8 aswell, i cant remember what theyre called though, OR what they look like, but maybe they wouldnt have that many curves thus making the game more enjoying due to less lag.
