You know you want to. :naughty: So I started in Radiant 1.4 last Friday and have been looking over some tutorialsand while most of them have taught me a lot there are some things I just can't make work. A few minor issues are with missing textures/shaders. Since the tutorials were actually for Quake3 they often refer to an sfx folder. Since JA doesn't have that you can usually find the things in another folder. I'm probably just not looking hard enough but I haven't been able t locate a shader for fire anywhere. Also, I made a custom texture(512x512 JPG) which shows in radiant but gives a missing texture in game. I can't be sure if it's because the texture is faulty or because I filed it improperly. The only things of major concern is with cameras/mirrors/camera portals. I tried a mirror shader, missing texture. Tried portal, the hole thing dissapears. And when linking misc_portal_surface to misc_portal_camera the tut says the line should be orange. It's blue and in game erases the surface brush. Danke fur reading. Any help or ideas appreciated. I hope these aren't stupid questions I'll be slapped around for. o.0

If you haven't already checked the Master Sticky at the top of this forum, read through it and find the tutorials link. Great stuff in there. :) As for cameras, that's a bit of a grey area. I found an excellent camera tutorial, but it was on Map-Center and I think the site has been closed down now. There's a mirror tutorial here, not exactly a camera tutorial, but it's the same theory, just needs a little initiative. Just... be careful of using too many. It make da big boom-boom lagzor, sometimes even enough to crash your system. I learned the hard way.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Also try Rich Diesal's Tutorials. They are written for JO/JA.

Yeah. I wnt through the master sticky and the tutorial pages. The one I found most useful were the ones on the 'Bubba's Arena' page. I also did DOsdues tutorials on pcgamemods. But sometims a tutorial just isn't enough and you need a little interaction to clarify what you're doing, y'know? I know mirrors are something to use very sparingly. But now I'm just working on a lil learners map where I practice all the new things I've learned. And I'd like to go by 'Until I get it working, I can't say I understand it', even if the instructions make sense.

Good idea ;)

That's what I did.. I made small test maps to see how everything works. Now I'm working on my first map for release... and hopefully it won't have millions of newbie mistakes

Well. Fortunately the things I'm having trouble with(custom texture error excluded) these are things I may not need for a rather long time, and I just wanted to get a handle on them in case the need did arise. I forgot all about Rich Diesals page, thanks for the reminder. Once I'm done ransacking that page I will probably know as much as is needed for my first project. Told my clan I'd make us a map since the last volunteer dissapeared off the face of the planet.

By the way. I was going through a forum of yours for a castle map. Looks good. Is that the map you're reffering to?

Yes :)

EDIT: If your custom textures just aren't showing up, you need to .pk3 the thing, or type "sv_pure 0" in the console before loading your map.

Took me the longest time to figure that out  (someone had to tell me lassev I think)

Heh...Yeah...Just found that out, since everything else in the assets list is already in base in PK3form(including other mods which can be used as sources). But if you used textures from another mod, for other people playing would it show up as a missing texture to people who didn't have the mod? Then I'd need permission to repack those textures with my map....

Yeah, if they don't have the mod, then the textures won't show up. That's why I simply refuse to use other player's custom textures unless I cannot make/find something myself. Best wishes in your mapping, Kyross.
