The thing is, I made a hilt, skinned it and whenever i try exporting it, my 3ds max crashes, i have 3ds max 9. Any other way to export it?
You'll have to get another 3D app and export it from there. As for free software, Gmax and Milkshape allow you to import your model and export to .md3, as do the rather expensive Max 4 to 8 with the right plugins.

You got "I'm screwed" out of "you can download a free program and export to MD3"?
There's also blender. It can import 3ds and there's md3 plugins out there somewhere. And it's free (unlike milkshape which is only available as a 30 day evaluation version) and still maintained (unlike gmax).

EDIT: when i try import i get : No appropriate import module found, improper file format is there maybe a plugin that would help me?
Do import. You should be able to import 3DS max formats.
Can't import :/ EDIT: found what i had to do, i exported from 3ds max as .3ds.
2nd edit: still, i cannot export it, import script works in both 3ds max and gmax, but export doesn't work in either one of them. 3RD EDIT!!!!: i did it, managed to do everything, thanks for help everyone. *bows*
