I was curious as to whether or not it is LEGAL to use JO maps/textures in JA and release this with a mod? I thought it was as they are both used by the same company and also heard that it was legal because it was mentioned that Raven Software o.k.s the use of it's game material in other Raven games...but I was not sure as to how correct this information is. If anyone has any information on this please respond, Thank you! Peace!

I'm pretty sure you can, as they allow Jk2 models in JA. and the Bespin map was ported over from jk2 with no controversy, so...

I agree with Haruki, I'm sure it's perfectly legal because as was said many JK2 models have been ported and ffa_bespin has and no one was sued/arrested/fined so I mean it should be fine.

That doesn't mean it's legal. I'm relatively sure porting material from JO to JA is illegal, however I'm also relatively sure that if you did it they probably wouldn't take any action against you. Everything that was ported legally from JO to JA was done by Raven.

If you're not making any money out of it, it shouldn't matter.

It's not a question of whether you're making money, it's a question of whether they're losing money. Porting massive amounts of materials from JO to JA may cause folks to stop buying JO. That's when LucasArts will probably come after you. However now JO may be unpopular enough to the point where they don't care... however that doesn't change the legality. Think of it this way. If you murder someone everyone on the planet hates, and no one punishes you, it's still against the law.

It's a very popular belief that Raven has said it's OK to port textures from JO to JA. So popular that I'm inclined to believe it, myself. Hmm... I have to say that comparing borrowing a few textures to murdering somebody is a bit drastic, don't you think, milady? You are scaring the poor mappers... :p

Well that way they will understand very clearly ;) By the way folks, there's a big difference between borrowing one or two textures or a sound or two and porting all of the JO maps. If I were Raven, I wouldn't care if you ported a few textures either :p Whole maps, on the other hand... Personally, if I were going to do it and release it I'd get their permission first. That's the only way to be sure it's legal.

That's probably not legal, but not a big enough thing where the developers would come after you.
