Well I don't know if this has been done already but I have managed to get the item inventory from JO working in JA, all I had to do was open up JO's config file and copy the binds then add them into JA.

Binds:

bind [ "invprev" bind ] "invnext" bind ENTER "invuse"

I tested it and it worked but found only two problems, The green energy background was not presant and the bacta item was not adding to the item inventory when either spawning the item and picking it up or by using the give cheat, so I opened up both items.dat's from ext_data for both JO and JA and compaired them.

Item code for bacta canister from both games:

Jedi Outcast: { itemname ITM_BACTA_PICKUP classname item_bacta worldmodel models/items/bacta.md3 icon gfx/hud/i_icon_bacta count 25 type IT_HOLDABLE [COLOR=Red]<-------------------------------[/COLOR] tag INV_BACTA_CANISTER [COLOR=Red]<-------------------------------[/COLOR] max 8 8 16 min -8 -8 -0 }

Jedi Academy: { itemname ITM_BACTA_PICKUP classname item_bacta worldmodel models/items/bacta.md3 icon gfx/hud/i_icon_bacta count 25 type IT_HEALTH [COLOR=Red]<-----------------------------------[/COLOR] tag ITM_MEDPAK_PICKUP [COLOR=Red]<-------------------------------[/COLOR] max 8 8 16 min -8 -8 -0 }

As you can see from the red arrows Jedi Academy has the wrong type and tag so all I had to do was change them back and it worked successfully.

I figured it was, as you had mentioned items.dat, which is only used for SP. I was just showing the MP version for reference, though not everything matches up with the holdable item system..

I've tried to make the bacta like this in SP, but when I press ENTER I can't use it...just the others... btw I can see it in the inventory list, just I can't use it (30 hp, 30 shield) x)
