I've had this thing...

Spoiler: Show
bsg_render3.jpg

... sitting on my hard drive for a while now.I made it a few months ago and couldn't figure out what the heck to do with the thing. Recently I started watching the 1st season of Battlestar Galactica and came upon an idea. What if I could rope some poor shmuck into doing a collaboration with me? A mapper, mayhaps? I would model and texture some smaller craft from BSG, while the schmoe makes a space battle map with the Galactica on one side and a basestar on the other. Some hangars, Vipers, Raptors, Raiders and Heavy Raiders, it would be frakking awesome!

So here's what I really made this thread for. I am looking for a mapper, preferably one who has seen nBSG, who would make the map I mentioned earlier and make it good. I would be able to help with texturing and making of various map objects, aside from modeling and texturing the ships. Who's up for it?

It could stand to be glossed up, but that's a really nice model!

No, please no. Every kid and their cousin thinks that an env_chrome shader makes every model an instant win when its just retarded for a DIRTY space ship to shine like a glazed piece of pottery. Hopefully, which I'm sure he does, Jose will not do such a terrible thing. It could just use some better texturing, burns, scratches and some paneling.

No-no, I like a beat up ship, but having a slightly glossy sheen in the series.

I kinda' wish you could see how my mind works- the ships I've got flyin' around in there? None of em' new; all used up and beat up.

A VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY slight specular shine is ok but anything more than that is just overkill, people seem to think that shiny shaders fix everything when they don't.

Yea, a bit of shine coming through behind that rust may do it some good... It all depends on whether the ship was built glossy or matte.

For instance. Did you ever see the Delta-7 Aethersprite vehicle? In some maps, it was...

SHINY OVERKILL.

I tried to dumb it down. Deleting it didn't work, so I opened up GIMP and just kinda' made it blackish. SLIGHTLY shiny.

I recall that technique working relatively well!

[Edit]I can't stand shiny shaders, but a glossy sheen is nice on a vessel such as this. Question... NSBSG vipers fire bullets- not lasers. Does this thing fire bullets? Sound effect and all? EDIT: By the way, about the map..? Yeah, it'd be cool- but only if you managed to pull off having a scripted event where you're propelled out of one of the tubes. Hard as that may be, it wouldn't be battlestar without that. This could be achieved by said script faking the ship activating, and the landing gears going up, and the boost key being pushed. You would then be propelled in a perfectly straight line, with no room for failure. Alternatively, the vipers could be on a pad that goes up into the tube, where you could then, after going up, push boost yourself. Albeit being far more risky, it is much easier to achieve. Only one side of the battlestar should be accessible, that being the hangar. Yes, even in a CTF map. It would be silly to go all the way to the CIC, cool as that would be- to get the flag. Unfortunately, we haven't the faintest on what Base-star hangars are like. Not an accurate depiction, anyways. We've got stills here and there, but is it enough to really go the distance? I think not. For laughs, it'd be nice to see a raider in the battlestar labled "STARBUCK" on the main hull's bottom. Like in the show. Just for funnies. If anything, raptors should be included. Maybe even The Blackbird! Jose, something tells me that if you made the models, people would be more than glad to help with rigging and assistance. We also cannot forget the Mark IIV vipers. Though the Mark II's are way cooler. smaller, too. EDIT: One last thing. If you modeled up Galactica herself, you'd definately get support. To scale? Uh... DUH. Everything's gotta' be on the right scale, but more things like this would really make people wanna' play JKA's space more often. I also think that there should be some vipers varying in painjobs- randomized. Black and Blue- like the hasbro titanium model. White and blue. White and yellow. Mark IIV vipers... Standard light-blue. Mark II Viper paintscheme, like the hasbro titanium model toy. Just some stuff like that would be cool as hell; And the vipers should have "PLAYER" as the name. It's generic, and could actually pass as a callsign. What would be REALLY cool... Are some nifty ideas, like Mark IV and VI vipers. Each really all the same in performance, but... Hey. It'd be cool to see the transition between robust and blocky, to sleek and sharky.[/Edit]

It's an old model, so it's gonna go through some retexturing and remodeling. No chrome anywhere, slight specular. Also, no more paneling. What's there is what was on the official model.

Right now it uses the rebel lasers, because I haven't gotten to the weapon effects yet. Still working on the thrusters.

I've planned on modeling a Raptor, a Raider and a Heavy Raider, so that the playing field would be even, for a fighter/interceptor and a heavy fighter/bomber on each side. I -might- make the Mark VII, but don't get your hopes up.

As for the old girl herself, I don't see much point in making her, seeing how we couldn't place her in the map proper. On the other hand, it would make for some pretty cool stills, if my Photoshop-fu can keep up...
