GtkRadiant.

3DS Max is a modelling program, not a map editor.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Actually Torchy (I think it was him) did "map" a level mostly in 3DS Max. However, it's not possible to do it 100% in Max, because obviously you cannot install any functional elements in there. And furthermore, you would need to build clip brushes for the models in Radiant, or all the map would be nonsolid. However, keeping this in mind it would be possible to make all the visible elements of a map in Max. Only the in game invisible elements would be handled in Radiant.

VIS and FPS problems that could be encountered are another thing altogether, though. But if the stuff build in Max were smaller elements (at max one whole room sized entities), then that could be avoided. However, if it was just one gigantic model, then it could be an FPS killer certainly.

i found radient irritating to use, i con only use a 3d program as long as it has the 3 perspectives, and in thoery of someone was to design an addon or plugin for 3dsmax you could in theory map in it. but radient does have ups and downs about it over a modeling program, you could very well model your map, then have someone you know that can map try to do it.

Are you saying Radiant only has one view? Radiant has 100's of different view points.

And you can't see any of the them simultaneously. I believe that was the point.

Well, actually, Radiant has 5 easily-accessible viewpoints. There's the 3D View, the top-down grid view, the height bar, and the grid view can be toggled through three different views - top-down (XY view), side view (YZ view) and another side view (XZ).

Modelling a map isn't really a smart thing to do, since the model would be non-solid - you'd have to make clip brushes which fit the entire map, and if you can make the entire thing out of clip brushes, you may as well have just used brushes in the first place.

Aside from that, modelling the whole map can cause performance issues and will increase load times drastically.

Kouenyou'd have to make clip brushes which fit the entire map, and if you can make the entire thing out of clip brushes, you may as well have just used brushes in the first place.[/quote] Hardly. Have you clipped models? You never need the same level of detail for the clip brushes than the model has. A very coarse work is perfectly fine. The player won't notice the difference. Not to mention texturing is not necessary when you are just clipping.

There are also plenty of maps made traditionally that have performance issues and long load times.
