Cutting the models into three sections is no problem. And sometimes a saber looks good with a big top and/or bottom with a smaller middle, or vise versa. it really depends on the person chosing the parts. What I dont like, others may love, and the other way around. And thats the beauty of it. If theres something about a saber that I dont like, I can make a few clicks and change it. If we could find a coder, this could really take off. The only problems I see are: 1) Getting people to make their sabers compatible with this. 2) Textures. Not everyone skins metal or chrome or bronze the same way. But, this would encourage modelers to make several sabers in a pack and make them compatible with this mod, this way their textures can match. 3) Shaders. Would they work for this? If so, how?
I think the way it would have to be done would be something like this.
TOP - Different style of a cap/top piece. MIDDLE - Different sizes/lengths/colored cylinders for the middle area with different arange ments of buttons. BOTTOM - Same as the top but its on the bottom.
It may work better with just two different pieces, at least for the single sabers. You don't want to make your computer think too hard while putting together the saber. If three sections are going to be used, it may work better off with a double-bladed saber. I do like this idea though. Hopefully someone can figure out how to do it!
i dunno if this helps, but here is a picture i made a while ago when my friend wanted me to make a design for his saber... however, he started to play wow instead :( here are some saber parts... hope u enjoy
