I didn't make it!

Hello all,

I'm pretty new to the world of mapping...but I've read through a number of tutorials and know enough to start building my own map. Anyway, on to my question.

The one thing that wasn't covered in any tutorial I've read that I really need is how to make a ladder.

So how is it done?

Well, you can't really make a true ladder that you grab on to, and climb up... Instead, we have glitchy replacements. Basically, in grid of 4 (press 4 for shortcut key), put your ladder steps about 2 units apart. And in 1 unit size, have each one above the other smaller so you can go forward and proceed to the next, if you get what im saying... Ill make a screenshot and picture later... The downside of this is that when you climb it, your not really climbing it as much as flying straight up. Also, the climb down is more of *walk forward* *fall 5 feet* *walk forward* *fall 5 feet*... ladders are not recomended from me as a mapper, unless its inside a ship or anything like that. If i were you i would just go with a simple stair case.

Or just make the ladder without any trickery trying to make it work when it obviously won't. JA has one thing to compensate for lack of ladders with - force jump.

Ladders are just aesthetic, tbh.

But if you really want it to work, there's always the 'jump pad' option, and I believe there was a trick involving modifying gravity floating around somewhere.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Actually.....I got a working ladder, but it's made via trickery and CSG subtract. Plus, going down it is tough. It has a good number of limitations.

However, if you want it, I'll post a .zip file so you can take a look.

Wouldn't a working ladder require a special entity forcing a ladder climbing animation, like in great many other games? Unless some MP code mod offers such a thing, I don't think you can talk about ladders.

I have a use button triggered target_push in front of the ladder to simulate the outcome (since it's an SP map, the preset force jump level isn't high enough).

I wonder how they did it in Elite Force. Is it the replacement Posezion has mentioned or something else? Some mapper (which I'm not) should check out the published EF map files if it hasn't already been done.

You're assuming Elite Force has the same source code as JA, which it doesn't. Ladders were intended to exist in Elite Force, but they were never intended to exist in JA. Elite Force actually supports ladder-like behaviour, JA doesn't. You'll find that few developers will ever bother coding features they're not going to use.

Also, checking EF .map files to learn about JA mapping? Really not the brightest of ideas.

Oh, I thought since JKA is a descendant of sorts of EF, most of the mapping techniques that work in EF would also work in JKA. But that was an uneducated guess.

Mikouen;4751728You'll find that few developers will ever bother coding features they're not going to use.

That doesn't imply that developers will remove useless code that's already there, if it doesn't do any harm.

nizwiz;4751735That doesn't imply that developers will remove useless code that's already there, if it doesn't do any harm.[/quote] I beg to differ. There is a lot of code in JAMP that was commented out/removed, and most of it was harmless. I miss many of those features.

Try some advanced Icarus scripting - it's crazy hard sometimes because you have to "take a walk in the woods" rather than just get the info you need. But it's so much more satisfying when JA starts exhibiting new behaviors.

Hey, we're lucky Raven didn't remove scripting for Jamp completely.

Yeah, the code was either never added or commented out.

Back to the original topic: Ladders in JA are either done with Lassev's method, or trickery. That's about as realistic as it can get.
