make a new NPC file and put it in "ext_data" then "npcs." look in "assets1.pk3" for examples.

The easiest way is to copy an NPC file from assets1/ext_data/npcs The files are fairly self explanatory. Now rewrite the top line with the name of your new NPC and change the model line (as well as weapon, health etc) adn place the file inside a folder named npcs, and that inside a folder called ext_data. Now compile that as a pk3 with your models folder.

Or, search on JKFiles for the NPC Tool. It's mostly self-explanatory, pretty good for those unfamiliar with NPC scripting.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

But it is more useful (and quicker) to be able to write them properly.

True, but it also takes quite some time to learn how to do that and to memorise all the parameters and values.
