And 3DS Max are the only modelling tools able to compile a proper XSI file for use with carcass, so that you can have a player model.

Let's google some software reviews, eh?
OK, from best to worst, based on average scores:
3DS Max - (9/10 average) Maya - (7/10 average) XSI - (7/10 average) Gmax - (6/10 average) Milkshit 3D - (3/10 average, but only because the makers bribed the reviewers)
So, there ya have it. I checked 5 reviews for each program.
However, only 3DS Max, Maya and XSI Mod Tools* can make player models. Well, any modelling program can make them, but without 3DS Max, Maya or XSI*, you won't be able to get them in game.
* XSI Mod Tools is the version capable of player modelling, right? Or is it SoftImage? Sorry, I'm really not familiar with XSI at all.
I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.
ty i was going to get gmax but now i know to get xsi
