I'm not too sure of the specifics, but try looking at mods by other people (if you're stuck for ideas, try searching "Iron Man" on jk3files.com) Looking at the shader files, you can use their shader as a template of sorts and then put in your filenames and then select which type of shinyness you want - in Assets1.pk3, look in gfx/effects, there are "chrome" options in there. Looking at them will give you an idea of what your weapons might look like. There's standard, white-ish, possibly a blue-tinted one... or try to add your own chrome image. Just keep trying and changing the chrome settings til you like it.

i know how to pice together a shader file for players skins, but it dont seem to work the same for weapons. i tryed basing my saber shader on a ja+ saber called jade=ElvishDesign. hold i think i might have missed one small thing. i check it to see if that is what im missing.

models/weapons2/your_weapon_folder/shinyshinytexture { q3map_nolightmap { map models/weapons2/your_weapon_folder/shinyshinytexture rgbGen lightingDiffuse } { map gfx/effects/chrome blendFunc GL_SRC_ALPHA GL_ONE depthFunc equal detail tcGen environment } } ^^Something like that should work. EDIT: The formatting just disappeared... remember to put in tab-spaces etc.

Well, I honestly don't know. I thought the .SKIN file told the game to put on so I don't know. Maybe the .SKIN file helps the game by letting it know that is on so should be applied.
