Technically, you're exactly right. But, since they own the materials, they can relinquish legal rights entirely, or specify partial exceptions, or exceptions based on circumstance.

They draw the line at any form of decompilation. For all intents and purposes, it's an illegal activity, even if you're only doing it for something as harmless as "taking a peek". I know, sounds hard-fisted, but if the system didn't work like that there'd be too many loopholes in it and it would be virtually impossible to support the legal rights of the developers/owners of the game materials.

I'm hardly going to bite your head off if you just take a peek inside it, but you'll have to keep it your own business. If you start modifying/distributing decompiled resources, "borrowing" bits and pieces, or start telling other people how to decompile any element of the engine, then I'm going to have to intervene.

It may be down to your own personal ethics on whether you consider it OK to simply copy stuff or "borrow" knowledge, but as far as these forums are concerned we have to enforce the law first, ethics second. It's all right there in Ziff Davis Media's policies, and we really don't have a choice but to play ball since ZDM owns this place.

Besides, teaching people on the art of decompilation will likely have a negative effect on the overall quality of mods in the community. Think about it - how many people do you know who would make something from scratch when they could just "borrow" it from elsewhere? I can only think of maybe... ten people. The rest, well, they're just as likely to cut corners as an underpaid builder... and we all know that cutting corners usually has side-effects.

We... do all know that, right? :lookaround:

If you have a specific question about how something was made, I suggest you either ask it here or in a mapping forum. You'll find someone who can probably answer it for you or even give you a better way than Raven did it. Even if it were legal, I wouldn't decompile a .bsp file and try to edit the .map file. It's always messed up when you decompile. You're better off taking screenies of the map and recreating it yourself if your intent is to "edit" the original map.

Not if you're making a circle! Anyway, how does overwriting models count as decompilation?

It doesn't, and no one said it did.
