I couldn't find any other threads on this, so I'll try here. To put it simple, I can't get GTK Radiant to run in Windows Vista. I would like to point out that I already know about the "solution" written on qeradiant.com:

taken from GtkRadiant - Trac Special note for Vista-users: You have to disable the desktop-styling in the properties of GtkRadiant.exe! In case of wrong menu-rendering you can switch to the "Raleigh" gtk-skin. The gtk-theme can be changed in [install-folder]/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.

I have tried their proposed solution, and my immediate response was "WTF?!?!?!?!?"

There's nothing like what they're talking about in Vista from what I can see. Has anyone else run into this? Are there any REAL solutions out there?

I assume "disable Desktop Styling" is referring to the Disable Visual Themes checkbox in the .exe file's properties.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Re-read the bolded part. :)

Well let me clarify.

I can not run the executable. The moment it opens, it immediately pops up a runtime error and closes. So I can't change properties inside the program. The error is

GtkGLExt-WARNING (recursed) **: cannot create GdkGLContext aborting...

As for the properties of the executable, there is nothing called "desktop-styling." I do have:

  • Run this program in compatibility mode for
  • Run in 256 colors
  • Run in 640 X 480 resolution
  • Disable visual themes
  • Disable desktop composition
  • Disable display scaling in high DPI settings

I've tried all these and none of them help.

Has there actually been anyone here who has Windows Vista, and is able to run GTK Radiant?

Don't know too much about vista, but it might work the same way as it does on XP (you know, selecting different runtime platform i.e. ME or 98). Did you try that? (right click the shortcut/exe and check properties there)

By "In the properties of the GTKradiant.exe", it may mean you right click the .EXE file and go into its "Properties".

Edit: Look in the attachment. It may mean what I pointed to, but I am not sure.

Edit2: Just reread over your post. You can ignore this.

Well I tried it a little bit. I guess I didn't try every option though. I know that this isn't just my problem (a.k.a. bad video drivers on my compy or whatnot) because another guy on my team is having the same problem.

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS M1330. So far, it has never worked for me. I get the following error message: "GtkGLExt-WARNING(recursed)**:cannot create GdkGLContext" and then is says "aborting..." I'm not sure why this error comes up. I have tried to uninstall, delete all reminants of GTK, then re-install and that has done nothing. I have tried to run it w/o Vista's Aero option, and it does that automically every time I try to load GTK. Also, I have downloaded the GTK 1.5, GTK 1.5 -fixed, and the GTK 1.5 GODFATHER installers. I used the latter of the three assuming it was the most up-to-date. So far I am encountering the same error as I did previous to the uninstall, delete, re-install. I have a desktop in which it works fine, but I don't always have my desktop with me. 1.4 and 1.5 work on my desktop but not on my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, I have tried every compatibility mode and option and configuation available and have gotten nowhere fast. Any suggestions? This doesn't appear to be my sole problem and I haven't found anything helpful on the web.

It actually has to do with video drivers. I am currently waiting for my OEM to write new drivers for my video. No news sadly yet. In the meantime I am running GTK Radiant on a much older system. I have other friends with Vista and they can run it fine. It's just all about the drivers bro.
