a friend of mine is having trouble getting JKA to work.

whenever she starts the game up on her laptop, it goes to a black screen and then crashes to desktop.

her laptop that she's attempting to play on it is very new, and it runs under windows 7. she has a ATI radeon 4570 with directx 10 and updated to the latest drivers. JKA is updated to the latest patch.

she has also tried swapping compatibility modes and running as administrator, but none of those seem to work.

any suggestions?

Install DirectX 9.0c redistribution. Yes, I'm aware she already has Dx10. If that doesn't work, tick 'Disable Desktop Composition'

i think she already installed that but i'll check with her and see if the other option works too.

she doesn't have any mods installed yet, she has movie battles 2 downloaded but hasn't installed it yet (she was seeing if base JKA worked first)

Some games need specific redistro's (Especially older ones, like JKA) Not everyone gets the same software (Especially when we're talking about DirectX...) ...What the hell is a screen going to do for you? It's a black screen.

Then try update it (I have the latest);) [/COLOR]

That's not what I'm saying. They might need to downgrade it. Just because it works for you, doesn't mean it works for everyone else. JKA needs to use the features from 9.0c redist, so I told them to install it to rule that out. Backwards compatibility doesn't work for every machine.

just thought i'd keep this topic updated even though all of the options haven't been explored yet.

as it turns out, my friend's graphics card is actually a ATI catalyst mobility 4570 so she had to download the latest drivers for that. it didn't improve the situation much, although now JKA gets to the splash screen before crashing instead of going right to a black screen and then CTD.

still haven't tried installing the directx 9.0c runtime or disabling desktop composition as it's been a busy last couple of days with christmas and all, but as soon as i find out more i'll post here.

Crashing as in black screen, or crashing as in console error with a message with it?
