Do you have a lot of mods in your base folder? Usually that's caused by having a lot of .npc files in your base. Any of those mods have a high number of NPCs?

Player skins in a sense ARE npc files. Remove all of the skins you don't use, that should help. If you use them all, remove the ones you use the least.

No, they're not. Don't state something as a fact that you don't know to be true. NPC files are files with the extension .npc. Some skinners/modellers include them with their skins/models, as you can not use the /playermodel command in single-player without one. If you want to see which of your PK3s have .npc files, open it up with PakScape or WinZip and look for the ext_data folder. There will be a folder inside called "npcs" which will contain the .npc files.
