So basically I set up a dedicated server on my LAN and tried to download a custom map from it. It told me that the map was going to take two hours to download.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Direct server downloads in Half-Life don't even take that long AND HL servers allow you to set a cvar called sv_downloadurl which directs the client to a webserver for the maps instead, making it even faster.
My question is this: why is there no such option for Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy and if there is, WHAT IS IT?
Thanks.
for hl came out AFTER ja
Well DemonCloud, it depends on which Half-Life he's talking about. If he's talking about Half-Life 1, then it came out BEFORE Jedi Academy, and Jedi Academy should have an option like that. If he's talking about Half-Life 2, then no Jedi Academy shouldn't have an option like that, but Half-Life 2 came out years after Jedi Academy.
Half-Life may have come out before Jedi Academy's, but Jedi Academy's engine is older and based on weaker technology than Half-Life's.
The Q3 engine's netcode was always very poor when it came to data transfers. Just one of those things we have to live with, as there's no way to rectify it.
However, auto-downloads should *always* be disabled, as they pose a major backdoor security risk to your server.
I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Aye! Xmod allows you to set a cvar "sv_downloadurl" or something similar to that..
Ah, Semedar is right. Thanks for reminding me about that. Almost forget about Xmod.
Aye anytime Syyrax, Xmod is my favorite mod, but the sad part is that there isn't alot of servers..
Heres the link to the Xmod website if anyone is interested. You can do lots with Xmod.
It doesn't work. It doesn't freaking work. I've exhausted myself trying to figure out the problem, but I've set up everything according to the website.
First it tried downloading jampgamex86.pk3 (why? I installed the XMod client, why should it try to download that?) but wouldn't because it said downloading was disabled on the server. When I copied the file myself just to see what would happen next, it tried downloading the map and said it couldn't because downloading was disabled on the server. I set the cvar correctly, made the silly required.lst file, I did every single thing and none of this makes any sense.
On top of that it's obvious that nobody plays using Xmod so even if I could get it set up correctly I somehow doubt anyone would play.
I am very not happy.
Lucasarts Technical Support suggested I give JA+ a try. I did, and it worked. Pretty freakin' awesome.
 LA Support is now making mod suggestions. Amusing that they are recommending player content to fix errors now. :p
