That would be warez, thus making it illegal, and strictly against the forum guidelines.

fair enough, i just thought id already paid for my license to play JA-a single working copy of its data is my consumer right, but distribution-wise it makes sense, i apoligise for raising it. I would assume then that i cant use any cd that my mates may possess, whether the original or a burnt copy, whether they dont even play the game and decide to relinquish it, nor can a non retailer sell a copy to me, as that would also violate distribution policy, so im therefore in a position where i have to pay 200% for a single functional licence? that is if i can even find a copy for purchase... call me cynical, but that sounds rather typical of a corporation

If one of your friends wants to give you a legit copy, then so be it. That's perfectly fine - it's their copy of the game, so it's their choice.

Downloading commercially available games (or any other software) off the internet is completely illegal, though, since it's a pirated copy. It's like downloading the 3DS Max demo and using some form of hack to make it the full version, if you see where I'm coming from. We typically don't allow nor promote such things around here for obvious reasons, namely it's a breach of US law so any instancing of it could result in FileFront being hit with a lawsuit, thus potentially jeopardising the entire network's existence.

oh dw i know exactly where your coming from, id just only considered in my haste that i had already paid for my license and required no hack to substitute that license, and that acquiring the data that accompanied said license was my right. it was an oversight on my part.

anyways, the free handover of anothers sole legit data and license by an individual is just as legal as being tendered data and license by a retailer? And these are my only options to remedy my problem?

Also, ive found that the 'missing ui/menus.txt' is in assets1.pk3

browsing the pk3 with winrar, and attempting to extract/view this or any .txt, i get a prompt quoting :

'file is either in an unknown format or damaged'

Attempting to open the pk3 with PakScape, i simply get an 'error reading pk3' prompt

Now, my question is, is this normal to be barred from accessing the file, or are my files actually damaged??

Is this on the disc or on your hard drive?

aha excellent thinking 99, cant believe i had overseen this troubleshoot.

It appears that in both CD and HDD, i can access all but assets1.pk3

it seems my problem stems from this file being damaged, im hoping that this occured in the burning process and not in the original image extraction. Ill try burning a new cd2 from my image and hope for the best

OK sweet with a bit of smart thinking i managed to get the game working :D

firstly, i found in the image of my original cd2, assets1.pk3 was indeed damaged. At this point id like to note the subsequent cursing involved... But then i realised, on my original discs it was the setup that refused to run and that i should still be able to browse the base folder. After checking assets1.pk3 and finding no drama i hastely copy/pasted it to my HDD and voila Im in :D

Now, seeing as how i need to create a new cd2 in case i decide to install again at some other point in time like i have now, i should only have to extract the existing image, replace the assets1.pk3, burn, then create a new backup image based on that disc.

Thankyou very much Kouen, and not just for your help and brainwaves, but also being a Sonic fan and continuing sega legacy !! *sheds a tear in memory of the MasterSystem*

If anyone else has a drama like this, this is how to fix it !!!
