Hi,

I'd downloaded a mod which is a weapon (a blaster), but I'd like to use it to replace one of the default weapons (the standard blaster, which is crap.)

How do I mod the files provided with the mod to do this? Is it even possible? What tools do I need?

Thanks!

In order to venture forth through the world of modding, you'd need the following tools:
KotOR Tool MDLOps NWMax GMax
Of course, if I understand it correctly, you want to create your own model/blaster and replace it with an existing one, right? Or do you mean using an existing model, edit it a bit and then replace an existing one as well? Either way, I suggest you take a look at the list of tutorials, specifically the Weapon Modelling tutorial.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks for the reply, and for the links.

To confirm, I want to put a mod that someone else has created into KOTOR. But instead of it being a new weapon in the game, which you get by typing in a cheat code, I want the mod to overwrite the KOTOR Bioware-created standard blaster pistol, the one you start with on the Endar Spire, which is the really crappy one that most enemies use on Taris, like the Black Vulkar gang members.

Basically I want a nice blaster pistol in the game, not just for me and the party members, but for the enemy NPC's as well.

Could you provide the name or link to the modification you have downloaded? I'd like to see the files. But most likely, this can be easily done by renaming the .uti and/or .mdx/.mdl files should it be a custom model as well.

It's this one: Socom Download, Knights of the Old Republic 2 Models

I think it's not so simple as renaming the files in the mod to match the BlstrPstl_001 name for the default blaster, The .mdl file has references in it to other files contained in the mod, which won't match the filenames for the default blaster. Tried hex-editing the .mdl file to change these references but Kotor crashed with the amended .mdl file.

[EDIT] Success! I missed an entry in the MDL file. Through hex-editing the MDL files correctly, and renaming the files to match the filenames relating to the standard KOTOR weapons, I've now got the Socom model as the standard blaster pistol, and the DL44 model from the Weaponry Improvement Project mod replacing the default heavy blaster pistol.

Now I can use other custom models to replace more of KOTOR's basic weaponry...and without changing any stats, either - no god weapons in the hands of my enemies!

You have to be careful hex-editing the MDL files though, you can't delete any characters when changing filename references. [/EDIT]
