I just installed KotOR 1 on my new computer, and I went to update it through the updater. It finished downloading the .zip into the /swkotor/temp folder, but it does not do anything else. I am not sure if this is normal, but I am not sure where to extract the updated contents to. Could somebody please let me know? Thank you in advance.

General the launcher updates the game itself. I've never had to manually download or manually install any patch.

Try a manual update from the official site (that's lucas arts) under support and yoda's help desk you can manually download the latest patch.
