Start some research about the races avaible. Then choose the one you like the most. What are you interested in? Winning or just Collecting?

Winning is more or less my primary concern

Well. My suggestion is: wait for the 5th Edition release date (5 July), or find the forthcoming manual in more obscure an mysterious ways. In the 5th Edition there will be more mobility for Infantry Units, Vehicle will be more resilient but less shooty and a bit slower (fast vehicles will move 18" instead of 24"), friendly Units will stop the line of sight. So: 1) possibly avoid mass armies 2) transports are still usefull, but not as they were before. In my opinion one of the strongest army at the moment is the Eldar one based on: Wave Serpents, Dire Avengers and Fire Dragons. It will probalby be balanced, very mobile and without useless units even in the 5th Edition. If you like the Space Elves you can try researching in that direction, if you hate them as I do other quite tested options for an easy victory are the Space Marines (but the next Codex will be released next October, so they are quite an incognito up to now), the Chaos Space Marines (the warp power "Lash of Submission" is A-B-NORMAL) and the Tau with a fair number of Crisis Suits.
