Armies with codex:

Space Marines: - Codex chapters - Space Wolves - Dark Angels - Blood Angels

Imperial Guard (Tallarn, Vostroya, Cadia, Armageddon, Krieg, Elysea, Mordia, Catachan etc etc...)

Tyranids

Eldar (different craftworlds, Harlequins...)

Dark Eldar

Chaos (Chaos marines, Lost and the Damned...)

Necrons

Tau

Orks (different armies, like speedfreaks)

Inquisitorial armies: Ordo Malleus (Demon hunters) -> Grey Knights; Ordo Hereticus (Witch hunters) -> Sisters of Battle. They also include Inquisitorial IG troops and assassins.

All these army lists enable you to create something new, i remember reading in a WD that one guy used the Lost and the Damned army list to create an Adeptus Mechanicus army made of "count as" models, this army looked damn good.

Before trying to create your own race and army with specific rules, which you're unlikely to ever play more than a few times, have a closer look at what already exists: i bet you'll find what you're looking for.

Anyways, jus to let people know Harlequins are now part of the Eldar army, there is currently not a list for a seperate army of just Harlequins.

Well there are the main races i think everyone talked about, and they are their armys other forces (e.g. Inquisition, Chapters) But there are also fluff armys (e.g. Custodians, Mangerchild). There are countless millions of mini races in the Galaxy so might only own one planet like us at the moment. So you can make up your own race (e.g. use guard bits with tau bits make a alien but slightly humany feel to the. Or mix Orks with nids.)

EDIT: The Custods are origanle space marines. They are champions of certain legions before the horus heresy that did not have the gene seed where put into their ranks to guard the Emperor. Not many Death guard lived through the horus heresy garro only took say about 100 of them who where still loyalist and even then they died. Not sure about Garro though, the custods are slowly dying form lack of fighting and old age (Before you say it, Yes marines can die of old age).

He said races not factions...otherwise there would be millions (what with imperium having far too many)

Anyway form what i can think of, Humans, eldar (dark eldar indluded, just warp tainted eldar), tyranids, orks (althought they're barley a race seeing as they're mushrooms), tau, necrons...i think that's about it

P.S. Amon they changed the rules for harlequins, they're an elite choice for eldar now

i know that, but after they changed the rules people used then as part of the eldar army, so why can't whe do it now?, just use the rules fow everyone of them as separate race, paint an avatar like a harlequin, with green stuff (the avatar of the laughing god), some wraithlords, there are still those parts to convert jetbikes into harlewuin jetbikes, convert an autharc, etc etc

why not?

Cause the guys in the Gaming Division, realized it was a broken list that had no balance to it at all. Thats why it was never published in 3rd edition and stayed in the EXPERIMENTAL RULES SECTION of GW's gaming.

Jus to let u know the back story in the Black Library Books, dont match the back story written by GW's authors. Jus like how the rules for the game dont represent the abilities of the Space Marines in the books. I work for GW right near the corperate hq. I've gotten to meet quite a few of the Black Library guys, and the GW authors. They dont corridante story line at all. Black Library authors try to do their research but sometimes cant find the facts, so they jus make it up.

Make your own, most casual gamers won't mind, but you probably won't be able to compete in an official tourdement with it.

If you want inspiration for a completely new race, I suggest you look at the Xenology book from the Black Library. There's many other races in the universe including the Hrud and the Loxatl You could even do Squats (eek, the 'S' word) P.S. the Adeptus Custodes are NOT champions from other Legions, it is rumoured they were created by genestock taken from the Emperor in the same way Marines are created from Genestock taken from the Primarchs
