were did they come from? who created them(if anything did like are they part of another race that evolved if so who)? who discovered them? what is the greater good? and how powerful are they i also want to no in order who the has the most to least power in the 41 millnum.I no its a lot but u can respond if u only no a few of them.
the tau are there own race who use the greater good as propaganda. they use other races such as the kroot as mercenaries. the advanced in technology and as a race incredibly quickly compared to other races, the reson they were able to stay alive was because there planet was disconected from the rest of the galaxy by warp storms. so then they spread out and started there little empire. as for how powerful they are, do you want tabletop, of fluff? cuz in fluff, they are kinda powerful, on tabletop, i have no idea. but the ethrials have vaginas on their heads that they use to control minds and make them believe in the greater good.

Well the tau appeared on a planted the Imperium should have colonised, pre-terraforming reports talk about a primitive lifeform on the planet, orders given: calling in a terraforming group in order to gather all the planet's ressources (oh, and also eradicate all xenos lifeform btw) but the expedition vanished in the warp and never reached its goal.
Meanwhile the tau's ancestors began to evolve, some strong to fight, others more packed for work etc etc. The 4 castes were already naturally created, but they kept fighting each other until a 5th mysterious caste appeared, the ethereals. These convinced all Taus to work together for the greater good.
Thus, the Taus united and started creating things and improving their technology. For the Greater Good.
Whas is this Greater Good? an Utopy where every single intelligent creature in the Universe would live in peace, gathered within the good Tau Empire. The problem is that they never thought of naturally hostile creatures out there in the Galaxy, and they soon learned so fight again, against all sort of threats. Their technology is pretty much advanced compared to the ancient and religious kept technology of the Imperium, but they nearly got wiped out before starting their real expansion. The Tau Empire is pretty small, a few clusters of stars and an Imperial Crusade was declared to crush this nest of Xenos. Even with their superior equipment, the Taus couldn't withstand the Imperial crusade, their battleships were not tough enough against the Imperial ones and their warrior, how brave they were, could not stand much against the fury of the Space Marines. Their luck was that at the same time Hive Fleet Kraken entered the galaxy and reached for its heart. The Empire had to redirect immediately his crusade to Ichar IV in order to stop the Tyranids. This saved the quite recent Tau Empire from destruction.
The Taus learned from this and keep improving their weaponry and other equipment as much as possible, the only thing they still don't understand is warp travel, which prevents them from expanding their empire fast enough.
Most or least power in 40k? Well everyone's basically balanced. I'd say the Imperium is the strongest as it has to deal with all other threats every day on thousands of battlefields Necrons are tough, but they're not so many and mainly on specific tomb worlds. Tyranids show up in massive hive fleets but have been repelled so far. Orks? well if they'de unite they could claim the whole galaxy with ease, good thing for everyone else: they just keep fighting their ennemies as much as themselves. Eldar are past, they're trying to keep the remnants of their lost empire together, but their golden age is over, still they're not dead yet and can hit very hard when they mobilise enough forces. Dark Eldars, probably the weakest race out there, they're many pirates who raid colonys and run away, they're considered as a minor threat by the Imperium, but i'm pretty sure a good old crusade could wipe their domains out. Chaos gets its powers from mankind, it's the Imperium's arch-ennemy, it's everywhere and very dangerous, a single deamon can enslave a whole planet, but still the traitors and heretics are fought back everyday, it's a war which is fought on the battlefields aswell as in everyday's life. Tau are tough due to their technology, but even in their own ranks renegades appear, like Commander O'Shova who created his own tau enclave, they've still got many things to discover in the galaxy and are still too small to be safe from a tyranid fleet or a massive waaaaagh.
Did i forget something?
The tau have already broken many a WAAAAAGH and the Farsight enclaves have a buffer zone from the Hive fleets and with Imperal attention else where (eye of terror) they have expanded and re-enforced the older septs.
o thanks both of you guys also who is the taus arch enemy like imperiam is chaos and so on and how do they classifie there regiments like sm have ultramarine blood ravens and all that and imperial guard have 8th cadian 180th cadian and so on and why dont the tau try and keep peace with the imperiam it seems that the tau like to bother the imperiam win they imperiam is at its weackest like when hive fleet krakin or somin like that came and the imperiam was spread out then the tau attack polia and the vostryons were slodered
Arch rival I believe whould have to be the orks. They killed a bunch or them to earn the respect of angor prok the head of all kroot, and save their home world. Comander Farsight made his reputation killing orks as did Shadowsun.
I didn't make it!
I believe that sooner or later the Tau are going to become as strong, or stronger! than anything else, but they will have a fallback, something will happen to them in the warp when they learn how to use it..

Karkin please take enough time to write your words properly, it's hard to understand what you're actually writing, especially for foreing ppl like me :(
Demonic Sarge, what i meant with a real big Waagh was something like Ghazkull Thraka's. Now that's a waaaaaaagh ! ;)
Tau and Imperial relations are quite irregular. 1st off, there are many people in the Imperium who believe that working with Xeons its heresy. 2nd the Tau believe they're superior to mankind and do not hesitate using foul and dishonorable tactics, like sending Tau-friendly humans to convince the diplomats that the Empire is silly, or shooting the diplomat's returning vessels down. 3rd they just can't keep their hands off Imperial territory! By the Emperor, why do they simply have to attack and steal Imperial Planets, eh? Can't they just expand anywhere else?
Hope codex: Xenos Hunters comes out soon so i can Deathwatch their Greater good up their blue hinies.
Tau are poo, they need fancy hats just to pick up a cup which is why they're so rubbish at hand to hand. Also, kroot sthrangth 4 WTF man total WTF all over the show, call me bitter, i'm an ork player(WAAAAAARRGGHH) and we only have S3 and we cost nine points, kroot are only seven, kroot hounds WS4 S4 six points, WTF all over the place.
Tau are better then orks. orks have sucky weapons and tau are much for advanced then orks orks need a whole nother ork just to do somthing they need there warboss and orks dont even have a brain and tau do so Tau are much better then orks now if u were sayying marines are better then tau then i would agree
